Recommendations

  1. Political parties should refrain from giving tickets to candidates with serious criminal cases.
  2.  Political parties should take a stand against misuse of money power, bribing of voters and distribution of freebies.
  3.  Political parties should move towards transparency and disclose the criteria for selection of candidates during elections.

How To Beat Invisible Glaucoma

13032014
How To Beat Invisible Glaucoma
Early detection, diagnosis & regular eye check up can only prevent

New Delhi, March 13, 2014 : Glaucoma is an emerging leading cause of blindness and it is referred as a thief of vision that steals the beam of life leaving it filled with profound darkness. In view of alarming rise in number of cases of Glaucoma, experts say that regular eye check can detect this deadly disease and early detection and diagnosis can only prevent.
Experts say that Glaucoma is an extremely serious eye disorder which can cause blindness if not treated early.
According to World Health Organisation (WHO), Glaucoma affects around 12 million people and accounting for 12.8% of the blindness in the country. Late onset of the symptoms results in many people being unaware of the condition. By the time person realizes the loss of vision, most of the damage has already been caused. As it has no symptoms until there is irreversible vision loss it is called Invisible Glaucoma.
Dr. Sanjay Dhawan, Director, Ophthalmology, Fortis Healthcare said, “Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve, the essential part of eye that carries images to the brain. In healthy eyes, a clear liquid circulates in the front portion of the eye. To maintain a constant healthy eye pressure, the eye keeps producing a small amount of fluid.”
“While in glaucoma condition, the fluid does not flow properly through the drainage system, which increases the pressure. This extra force presses on the optic nerve in the back of the eye, causing damage to the nerve fibres,” he added.
During the last few months Fortis Healthcare screened 1,600 patients in Delhi and out of these 125 was detected with Glaucoma.
“This amounts to 7.8 % prevalence, which is much higher than the national prevalence rate. While a larger study may be needed to definitively extrapolate the findings to the entire population of national capital, this high incidence is a grave cause for concern,” Dr Dhawan said.
There are mainly two types of Glaucoma Condition: -
Chronic glaucoma: The most common is chronic glaucoma in which the aqueous fluid can get to the drainage channels (open angle) but they slowly become blocked over many years. The eye pressure rises very slowly and there is no pain to show there is a problem, but the field of vision gradually becomes impaired.
Acute glaucoma: Acute glaucoma is much less common, this happens when there is a sudden and more complete blockage to the flow of aqueous fluid to the eye. This is because a narrow “angle” closes to prevent fluid ever getting to the drainage channels. This is quite painful and can cause permanent damage to sight if not treated promptly.
However, if adequate & appropriate measures are taken early in the course of disease, blindness from glaucoma can be prevented. So the key message to provide is that Glaucoma should be taken seriously. Early diagnosis & regular eye check up can only prevent you from lifelong blindness.
Causes of Glaucoma
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiac Arrest
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Myopia
  • Hyperopia
  • Eye Injury
  • Hereditary
  • Over the counter steroids or eye drops
As the symptoms of Glaucoma are not visible, the most efficient method for detection is regular eye examination. Therefore, as glaucoma becomes common over the age of 40 one should have regular eye tests at least every two years.
The only way to protect one from vision loss due to glaucoma is by early detection.
Treatment Of Glaucoma

Glaucoma can be managed if detected early, and that with medical and surgical treatment. Eye drops, pills, laser surgery, traditional surgery or a combination of these methods are used for the treatment.
Trabeculectomy- It’s a kind of Filteration surgery, a piece of tissue in the drainage angle of the eye is removed creating an opening. This new opening allows fluid to drain out of the eye, bypassing the clogged drainage. This is not a major surgery; patient doesn’t need to stay in hospital following surgery.
Glaucoma Drainage Implant

Glaucoma drainage implants play an important role in the management of refractory glaucoma. It is not used to improve vision, but to preserve vision by lowering the intraocular pressure.

IDSA emphasizes on Protection of Consumer Rights

IDSA emphasizes on Protection of Consumer Rights in Non-Store Retail on upcoming International Consumer Day
Need of the Hour: Exclusive Consumer Policy for Non-Store Retail

New Delhi, 12th March 2014: To safeguard the interests of the consumer in Non-store retail and to stimulate the policy framework for Direct Selling Industry in India, industry demand to define exclusive Consumer Policy for Non-Store Retail at the National Conference organized by Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA) on “Consumer Rights in Non-Store Retail- Unleashing Inclusive Growth” today at New Delhi on upcoming International Consumer Day. The conference was supported by AMCHAM, PHD Chamber of Commerce, Retail Association of India and Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce.

Mr.Manoj Parida, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Consumer Affairs during the inaugural session emphasized on transparency and accountability for the Protection of Consumer Rights in India.

Parida further said, “We appreciate that the industry bodies have come together to protect the consumer rights. The government is working towards forming the legal framework for protection of consumer rights for all the stakeholders of the industry. We do have some reservations as government needs to take care the interests of all the stakeholders. India has evolved and developed at very fast pace and we as the government were not able to match the pace but govt. is working towards legal framework. We will surely come up with the some regulations to protect all the stakeholders.”

With economic development and growing consumerism, the retail and FMCG sector in India has underwent significant changes.  In last ten years, Non-Store Retail in India has certainly come a long way. Ms. Chavi Hemanth said, “It is a collaborate moment of consumers, government, businesses and society to ensure protection of consumers from the uncertain, unfair dealings by fraudulent activities which operate under the garb of many Non-Store Retail Formats. The need of the hour is a legislation which covers all the aspects of Non-Store Retail. Such legislation will help in curbing the growth of fraudulent activities which shut down after usurping the money from the consumers.”

Mr. Amarnath Sengupta, Chairman of IDSA said, “The Non-Store Retail Industry needs to take steps to ensure that customers are satisfied by their service, since word of mouth acts as the biggest means of attracting new customers. Non-Store Retail is a segment which is scheduled to grow and it is the responsibility of the existing players to ensure that growth is not hindered by their acts by bringing in transparent policies.”

Non-Store Retail format has been gaining popularity in India on account of low entry thresholds and the breadth of customer coverage is wider in Non-Store Retail format than in individual retail location.

With the increasing importance and value of Non-Store Retail in India and all across globe, IDSA identified and evaluate the significance of legal framework serving it. Ms. Hemanth stated that “The involvement of different intermediaries and gateways in the transactions of Non-Store Retail has made the business complicated. Therefore the regulatory needs for it have increased.”
On this occasion on International Consumer Day, IDSA also released a report on Consumer Rights in Non-Store Retail which stated that “In the present scenario there are no specific legislations or guidelines protecting the buyers and sellers of goods and services in the Non-Store Retail. The major consumer protection issues in Non-Store Retail in India, the Consumer Protection Act 1986 (“CPA”) governs the relationship between consumers and service / goods providers. There is no separate consumer protection law that is specific to and regulates transactions taking place in Non-Store Retail. There are several barriers to Non-Store Retail i.e. Distribution Channel Vendor Management, Taxation, collusion and Fraudulent Activities.”

Other key persons present at the event were Mr. Bejon Misra, International Consumer Policy Expert, Arpita Mukherjee, Professor, ICRIER, Mr. Amarnath Sengupta, Chairman, IDSA, Mr. Tony Greig, General Counsel and Director, Amway of Australia and New Zealand and Director Legal, Amway India, Mr. Shivank Sidhu, Head Marketing, Utsav Fashion, Mr. Amarjeet Singh, Project Coordinator, CUTS International, Ms. Dipakshi Khaira, Head, Customer Service, Snapdeal, Ms. Asha Idnani, Chairperson, Consumer Complaint Redressal Council (India) and Code Administrator – IDSA, Mr. Sekhar Seshan, Sr. Journalist and Former Executive Editor and Bureau Chief, South Business India Publications Ltd., Professor Shri Ram Khanna, Senior Vice Chairman, Consumer Voice Advocate Anand Patwardhan, Leading Consumer Rights Activist, Mumbai and Dr. S.P.Sharma, Chief Economist, PHD Chambers of Commerce.

The conference was organized by IDSA with an aim to spread awareness among the audiences and the public at large on the issues relating to Consumer Protection in the Non-Store Retail. Non-Store Retail has emerged as major avenue for employment for youth. Therefore policy makers need to adopt a holistic approach towards initiative which will give boost to the investments in the sector.

IDSA, the organizing association has been championing the cause of Direct Selling Industry in India and has been continuously advocating with the Government to lay procedures for identification of legitimate direct selling companies.

Obama rejects Russia's 'slapdash' referendum in Crimea

Obama rejects RussiaUpdated on : 13-03-2014 03:56 PM
US President Barack Obama has vehemently rejected the Russian bid for a "slapdash" referendum in Ukraine's Crimea region to merge it with Russia.

"We completely reject a referendum patched together in a few weeks with Russian military personnel basically taking over Crimea. We reject its legitimacy. It is contrary to international law. It is contrary to the Ukrainian constitution," Obama told reporters following his meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

"I know that we've heard from the Russian Federation this notion that these kinds of decisions are often made in other places, and they've even analogised it to Scotland or other situations of that sort," he said.

"In each of those cases that they've cited, decisions were made by a national government through a long, lengthy, deliberative process. It's not something that happens in a few days, and it's not something that happens with an outside army essentially taking over the region," Obama said.

"The issue now is whether or not Russia is able to militarily dominate a region of somebody else's country, engineer a slapdash referendum, and ignore not only the Ukrainian constitution but a Ukrainian government that includes parties that are historically in opposition with each other - including the party of the previous president," he said.

"So we will not recognise, certainly, any referendum that goes forward. My hope is that as a consequence of diplomatic efforts over the next several days that there will be a rethinking of the process that's been put forward," said the US president.

Santosh Bhartiya clears all the accusations made on him by Anna Hazare

15032014

New Delhi, 15th March 2014: The entire country went into a shock recently after their National Hero Anna Hazare backed out of a much publicized rally which was held at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi. This rally was organized for people to know more about Anna Hazare’s 17 point agenda which is in the interest of our country, India. However, unfortunately Anna Hazare was misguided by a few vested parties which resulted in Anna ji dropping out from the rally. Now, Anna Hazare has been heard accusing veteran journalist Santosh Bhartiya for not gathering the crowd in huge numbers for the rally held on 12th March, 2014. It is unfortunate to know that the social activist believes that a former journalist of Santosh Bhartiya’s stature should run around gathering crowds for his rally.

A press conference was held at Constitutional Club, New Delhi where Santosh Bharitya clarified his stand about Anna Hazare’s accusations and made it very clear that it doesn’t come under his responsibility to gather crowds. Infact, the crowd would gather only due to Anna Hazare’s charisma. It also surprised Santosh Bhartiya on why the crowd didn’t gather as Anna Hazare’s popularity is unmatchable. Nonetheless, Santosh Bhartiya strongly believes that Anna Hazare should have addressed the crowd who had gathered at Ramlila Maidan. He is not Asaram Bapu who believes in speaking only to a huge gathering. He shouldn’t have behaved like him as Anna Hazare is a revolutionary man.  The entire disappearing act has disappointed not only the gathered crowd and the media but also the entire nation who were eagerly waiting to hear Anna Hazare’s views & thoughts.

Also, after the rally was held Anna Hazare met a few NGOs on 13th & 14th March, 2014 and is planning another political front.
As a sincere journalist and a responsible citizen of India, Santosh Bhartiya has played a huge role in bringing two honest personalities like All India Trinamool Congress Chairperson Mamata Banerjee & Social Activist Anna Hazare on the same platform for the betterment of the country. Santosh Bharitya’s involvement in getting these two together wasn’t liked by many parties and his closeness to Anna Hazare also created a lot of uneasiness. Santosh Bhartiya expressed his displeasure about Anna misunderstanding him and also declared confidently that all those who benefit from this entire incident will be exposed soon.

Santosh Bhartiya also pointed out that there’s an international conspiracy behind Anna Hazare’s U-Turn by a few foreign funded NGOs. These NGOs are also supported by the Government ruled parties, hence benefitting these political parties. Infact, there are several political parties who were unhappy about Anna Hazare and Mamata Banerjee’s association as they are pro-people and are a serious threat to the corporate sector. The very fact that these two powerful people coming were together had become a sore to the eyes of many political and corporate communities.
The misunderstanding between Anna Hazare and Mamata Banerjee has been created so that their philosophy of anti-capitalist gets destroyed. Santosh Bhartiya at the press conference urged Anna Hazare to understand this and not get distracted by people who have malicious intent. A fact sheet was distributed to the media which describes the entire event sequence and how Santosh Bhartiya has been instrumental in Anna Hazare’s nation-wide campaigns. This sheet will also be sent to Anna Hazare with the hope that he realizes his mistake and not get manipulated by those who have evil thoughts for our nation. With this entire incident, people who trusted Anna Hazare are feeling betrayed and believing that the ‘Great Anna has done Great Injustice’.

Aircraft MH370 communication system deliberately switched off

Missing plane
Malaysian investigators suspect that the communication system in the missing aircraft was deliberately disabled and its transponder switched off before the plane veered from its path and flew for more than seven hours.
Prime Minister Najib Razak, who appeared before the media for the first time after a Malaysia Airlines flight with 239 people on board went missing without a trace on Saturday, stopped short of saying it was a hijack.”…we are still investigating all possibilities as to what caused MH370 to deviate,” he said.
Najib’s statement confirmed growing speculation that the disappearance of the plane, which took off from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, was not accidental as the probe will now bring under scrutiny the flight’s crew and passengers.
Shortly after the Prime Minister’s statement, police went to the house of Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, the pilot of the missing flight.
Two police officers went to 53-year-old Capt Zaharie’s house in the suburb of Shah Alam here, officials said, without further elaborating.
“Based on new satellite communication we can say with a high degree of certainty that the aircraft communication addressing system was disabled just before the aircraft reached the east coast of Malaysia,” Najib told reporters.
He said authorities are now trying to trace the plane across two possible corridors – in the north to the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, and a southern corridor from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean.
He said the aircraft’s transponder was switched off shortly afterwards when the plane was between the border of Malaysian and Vietnamese air traffic control.
“Radar data showed that from this point onwards a plane believed to be MH370 did turn back and turned back in a westerly direction before turning north west.
“These were deliberate actions of someone on plane,” he said.

Flexibility of Online Education Helps One Student Achieve Success
Carly Barnes, University of Florida master's student studying agricultural education and communication (AEC), started her graduate program as a traditional, on-campus student. However, after dealing with some health concerns midway through her graduate program, Barnes had to relocate back home, nearly four hours away from the University of Florida's main campus in Gainesville.

Being nearly four hours away from the university's main campus and still needing to complete her master's degree, Barnes chose to utilize the department's online Master of Science option. With the program's flexibility and wide variety of course offerings, the online Master of Science option through AEC proved to be a solid choice for Barnes.

Barnes, studying agricultural education and communication, with a specialization in agricultural communications, had taken the majority of the classes she needed for her agricultural communications specialization. At this point in time, she was looking for supporting courses to add to her program of study.

"The nice thing about AEC's online program is that while the specializations are different, each course's curriculum is complementary. I have taken classes in the department's leadership, education and extension specializations that really complement the things I have learned within my own agricultural communications specialization," said Barnes.

GOPIO 25th ANNIVERSARY CONVENTION TO BE HELD IN TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO International) will be holding its 25th (Jubilee) Anniversary in Port of Spain in Trinidad & Tobago, with a 2-day gala celebration on 27th to 29th May, 2014 preceding the annual Indian Arrival Day commemoration in that country. GOPIO International Trinidad & Tobago Chapter will be the convention host, along with a well organized convention team which includes GOPIO's regional and international chapters, executives, councils and life members, as well as businesses, government, organizations and academic supporters.

Hosting of GOPIO 25th (Jubilee) Anniversary in Port of Spain has been enthusiastically endorsed and supported by the Government of Trinidad & Tobago, prominent persons of Indian origin and several chambers of commerce, businesses, organizations, academicians and academic institutions, media and others.

The strong relationship between GOPIO and Trinidad & Tobago began with the formation of GOPIO in 1989 with high level representation of several prominent persons from Trinidad & Tobago, as well as other countries of the Caribbean region. This relationship blossomed to continuing participation in GOPIO at the highest levels at GOPIO's major events and GOPIO's many visits to Trinidad & Tobago over the years. In addition, the International Chapter of Trinidad & Tobago is among the most active and vibrant of GOPIO's many chapters globally, addressing current and critical community issues such as spousal abuse, alcoholism, education, children and health concerns. GOPIO is proud to have hosted Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar on 12th January, 2012 at special reception/dinner in Kolkata during her visit to India as the chief guest at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2012.

GOPIO chapters in the Caribbean region are: Trinidad & Tobago; Guyana; Suriname; St Vincent; Belize; Guadeloupe and Martinique, with others in formation in Jamaica, St Lucia, Grenada and Barbados. Recently, GOPIO has held and collaborated on several major conferences in the Caribbean region: Trinidad & Tobago (2011); St Vincent (2012); Suriname (2013); Guyana's 175th Indian Arrival Day Commemoration (2013); and Belize (2014). Minister Vayalar Ravi (India's Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs) visited Trinidad & Tobago and other countries in the Caribbean region in 2007, 2011 and 2013.

PASSENGERS FLYING INTO INDIA HAVE TO DECLARE OVER RS. 10,000 IN NEW IMMIGRATION FORM

Passengers flying into India will have to declare Indian currency exceeding Rs 10,000 being brought by them, according to new Custom Rules which has been implemented from March 1, 2014.

Besides, they will also be asked to declare number of baggage, including hand baggage, while entering into India, said the new rules notified by the Finance Ministry on February 10th.

Earlier rule appearing in the Govt. of Indian website showed that international passengers could not carry any Indian currencies to India and they also have to carry Indian rupees while leaving India. GOPIO Convention in New Delhi had passed a resolution which was submitted to Prime Minister's office to change that rule to allow NRIs/PIOs as well as international passengers to carry limited amount of Indian rupees.

According to new rules under Customs Baggage Declaration (Amendment) Regulations, 2014, an Indian citizen would need to fill up the immigration form only when he or she goes out of the country. There will be no immigration form for Indian citizens returning from abroad.

All passengers coming to India will be filling up a new 'Indian Customs Declaration Form' which will seek details that will be different from the detachable perforated strip which is a part of the immigration card at the moment.

The 'Indian Customs Declaration Form' carries additional fields for declaration of dutiable and prohibited goods, which will help authorities in checking customs duty frauds and keep a record of gold jewelry and bullion being brought into the country, customs officials said.

For the first time, travelers would be asked to specifically declare any prohibited articles, gold jewelry (over free allowance), gold bullion and Indian currency exceeding Rs 10,000 in the new form, they said.

A passenger will have to give details of countries visited in the past six days and mention the passport number on the new form, which was not there earlier.

Old fields like declaration of satellite phone, foreign currency exceeding $5,000 or equivalent, aggregate value of foreign exchange including currency exceeding $10,000 or equivalent, meat, meat products, dairy products, fish or poultry products and seeds, plants, fruits, flowers and other planting material have been retained in the new format.

The passengers will also have to give details of baggage, including hand baggage, being carried by them in a separate column on the form.

India has 19 international airports in Srinagar, Amritsar, Jaipur, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Nagpur, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Goa, Bangalore, Chennai, Calicut, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Port Blair.

INDIAN PASSPORT, VISA, OCI CARD AND PIO CARD OUTSOURCING AGENCY TO BE REMOVED

Following up on a large number of complaints from frustrated India travelers, the Indian Embassy in the US has announced on Feb. 5 that it is accepting bids to replace BLS International, its current outsourcing service that accepts and processes visa applications.

A new company is scheduled to service the U.S. by the end of May 2014, which is expected to establish centers in New York, Houston, San Francisco, Houston, and Atlanta; the number of centers may increase if the need arises.

GOPIO Passed Resolution to Remove BLS International

GOPIO and other Indian community organizations have been campaigning to remove BLS International for the last six months. At the GOPIO Delhi Convention, GOPIO passed a resolution to that effect as follows:

Unreasonable & Unrealistic Harassment of NRIs & PIOs by BLS International

Issue: The procedures established by the Government of India and the services provided by BLS International to support the Consular Services are so poor that it brings shame and suffering who wish to travel to India.

Whereas GOPIO commends Government of India for organizing these PBDs in a fabulous manner by spending millions of dollars; and,

Whereas GOPIO commends the well-intentioned Government of India to serve the Indian Diaspora through these PBDs; and,

Whereas the members of the Indian Diaspora need to make travel arrangements to visit India and need consular services for their VISAs, OCI Cards, and/or Renewal of Indian Passports; and,

Whereas the Government of India has procured the services of BLS International to expedite the consular services provided by the Indian Mission abroad; and,

Whereas the services provided by the BLS International are so poor and the behavior of BLS personnel so terrible that the Indian Missions abroad, and, the Government of India are getting a worse public opinion and press; it is indeed shameful.

Therefore, be it resolved that GOPIO request Government of India replace BLS International with an efficient and competent service agency that can facilitate the workload of Indian Missions and serve the Indian Diaspora with respect, dignity, decency and efficiency.

The invitation from the Indian Embassy to vendors implicitly states: "The agencies would be expected to provide courteous and efficient service at all times. The Embassy / Consulates General reserve the right to monitor the quality of service provided and impose necessary corrective measures on the agencies in terms of their contractual obligations.

BLS International began its services in the U.S. in July 2013 and quickly gained a reputation for its lackadaisical approach to processing visa, Overseas Citizen of India and Person of Indian Origin applications.
BEYOND BOLLIWoOD - INDIAN AMERICAN DIASPORA HERITAGE EXHIBITION OPENS AT the SMITHSONIAN IN WASHINGTON, DC

BEYOND BOLLYWoOD - INDIAN AMERICAN DIASPORA HERITAGE EXHIBITION OPENS AT the SMITHSONIAN IN WASHINGTON DC

Of the 137 million objects owned by the Smithsonian, only a handful represents the history and experience of the roughly 3.3 million Americans with roots in the Indian subcontinent. So in 2008, the institution decided to stage the exhibition "Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation," which opened on Thursday, February 27th.

Indian Americans have been recognized as a model minority, celebrated for their achievements in different fields, and feted for their contribution to American society. They own some of the most-prized records in the United States, from the best-educated ethnic group to earners of the highest per capita income, nearly twice the national average. But their history in the United States going back two centuries has been a spottily-recorded mystery, although the first ones arrived on these shores in the 1790, just a over a decade after American independence.

Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC plugged this gap significantly, rolling out the first-ever exhibition chronicling the heritage of Indian immigrants and Indian Americans and the contribution they have made to the American melting pot.

With dozens of historical and contemporary images, including photographs, films, and artifacts, the exhibition documents tales of discrimination, resistance, and achievement, starting with the struggles for citizenship in the first half of the 20th century, professional contributions from the 1960s and beyond, organizing for labor rights, women's rights and labor rights and cultural contributions through food, music, dance and in the entertainment industry in recent years.

The vivid images and stories include Indian labor in the building of US railroads and in farms and lumber mills in the 19th century, to the well-known journey of Swami Vivekananda to America later in the century. There are lesser-known milestones such as the Indian debut in Hollywood through the child actor Sabu Dastagir in the 1930s, pre-dating the entry of a raft of Indian-Americans into the entertainment industry.

Early recorded Indian contributions to science and technology include the effort of Yellapragada Subba Rao and Nobel laureate Hargobind Khorana to the more recent achievements of technology pioneer Vinod Dham that is now part of the Indian-American folklore in Silicon Valley.

The Indian-American political rise is captured in a striking photograph of Congressman Dalip Singh Saund (the first Indian-American elected to the US House of Representatives) with President Kennedy and Vice-President Lyndon Johnson, although the community's political awareness is reflected from the very beginning with the arrival refugees on board the ship Komagatamaru and the subsequent founding of the Ghadar Party.

The community's spiritual input into American consciousness is seen in another photo showing Swami Satchidananda addressing the Woodstock music festival in 1969, where Pandit Ravi Shankar also played.

Smithsonian's Masum Momaya, who has curated the exhibition, said at a media preview that the title and the theme "Beyond Bollywood" was chosen intentionally "to attract visitors and show we intended to go beyond stereotypes." As with any group, she said, we are a lot more than popular stereotypes suggest, "And my intention as a curator has been to focus on cultural, political, and professional contributions that the Indian-Americans have made to shaping US history."

The exhibition, which is also funded by more than $1 million in contributions from the Indian-American community besides Smithsonian's own input, has opened to the public and will run for at least a year, before it goes on the road as a travelling show for five more years.

INDIAN AMERICAN SCIENTIST SANGEETA BHATIA DEVELOPS CHEAP PAPER TEST TO DETECT CANCER

MIT scientist Sangeeta Bhatia has developed a cheap, simple, paper test that can detect cancer, circumventing expensive approaches such as mammograms and colonoscopy.

The diagnostic, which works much like a pregnancy test, could reveal within minutes, based on a urine sample, whether a person has cancer, MIT said in a statement announcing the amazing breakthrough, adding that while this approach has helped detect infectious diseases, the new technology will allow non-communicable diseases to be detected using the same strategy.

Dr. Bhatia, John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Professor at MIT and a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, explained that the paper test essentially relies on nanoparticles that interact with tumor proteins called proteases, each of which can trigger release of hundreds of biomarkers that are then easily detectable in a patient's urine.

"When we invented this new class of synthetic biomarker, we used a highly specialized instrument to do the analysis," said Dr. Bhatia. "For the developing world, we thought it would be exciting to adapt it instead to a paper test that could be performed on unprocessed samples in a rural setting, without the need for any specialized equipment. The simple readout could even be transmitted to a remote caregiver by a picture on a mobile phone."

Cancer rates in developing nations have climbed sharply in recent years, and now account for 70 percent of cancer mortality worldwide. Early detection has been proven to improve outcomes, but screening approaches such as mammograms and colonoscopy, used in the developed world, are too costly to be implemented in settings with little medical infrastructure.

The MIT nanoparticles are coated with peptides (short protein fragments) targeted by different matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). These particles congregate at tumor sites, where MMPs cleave hundreds of peptides, which accumulate in the kidneys and are excreted in the urine.

In the original version of the technology, these peptides were detected using an instrument called a mass spectrometer, which analyzes the molecular makeup of a sample. However, these instruments are not readily available in the developing world, so the researchers adapted the particles so they could be analyzed on paper, using an approach known as a lateral flow assay - the same technology used in pregnancy tests.

INDO-CANADIAN T.V. PAUL WRITES A NEW BOOK ON PAKISTAN

Dr. T.V. Paul, James McGill Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science at McGill University, Montreal, Canada has written a new book, "The Warrior States: Pakistan in the Contemporary World," released by Oxford University Press on Feb. 3. In this new book, Dr. Paul tackles what may be the world's most dangerous powder keg and untangles a fascinating riddle-why can't Pakistan progress?

Paul identifies the fundamental source of Pakistan's lack of progress in his book as "a geostrategic curse and the hyper realpolitik ideas that the country's elite hold in creating and maintaining a semi-feudal society," according to a press release.

Since its founding in 1947, Pakistan has been the center of major geopolitical struggles-the U.S.-Soviet rivalry, the conflict with India, and most recently the post 9/11 wars. No matter how ineffective the regime, massive foreign aid continues pouring in from major powers and their allies with a stake in the region.

The reliability of such aid defuses any pressure on political elites to launch far-reaching domestic reforms that would promote sustained growth, higher standards of living, and more stable democratic institutions.

In his book, Paul tackles the questions: Why has Pakistan emerged as a "failing state," a state that cannot provide minimum law and order, control various competing societal forces, and survive economically without external support?

He also asks: Why does it remain a heavily militarized warrior state with narrowly defined national security concerns while several military-ruled countries in Asia and Africa have become democratic?

In an effort to "encourage the Pakistani elite and informed public to think hard on the nation's strategic and economic choices that were made in the past 65 years and the consequences that they have generated internally and externally," Paul executes a thoroughly researched argument that clarifies the true cause of Pakistan's failure to process, added the publicist's notes.

INDIAN AMERICAN ABRAHAM PANNIKOTTU TO DEVELOP ZERO PRESSURE TIRE FOR THE US MILITARY

Getting a flat tire is never convenient. In a war zone, it can be deadly and very dangerous. While special operations vehicles have been loaded with extra armor to protect troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, the tires remain vulnerable to attacks by improvised explosive devices (IED). The unique carbon fiber multiple hoop tire design by American Engineering Group may be the key to a new Zero Pressure Tire that could keep military vehicles running faster and longer after an attack.

Indian American Abraham Pannikottu owned American Engineering Group (AEG) has received a $1 million Phase II project grant from the US Department of Defense (DOD) to develop a tire that will continue running even after being shredded by roadside bombs or gunfire. Though military vehicle tires are now equipped with run-flat inserts, the DOD wants to upgrade to a zero pressure tire that's better at carrying heavier loads and can quickly move soldiers out of harm's way.

When engineers at American Engineering Group began working on tire designs, they settled on a flexible multiple carbon fiber hoop structure - which functions like air inside a tire. Along with carbon fiber multiple hoops for strength, the design allows shrapnel and high-caliber bullets to pass through the tire. During project phase I testing in 2011, the tire continued to run well - keeping the same functional road performance - even after receiving several rounds of gun shots.

Zero pressure tires have been around for a long time, with major drawbacks such as bumpy rides and overheating. The American Engineering Group (AEG) prototype dissipates heat and has the tire flexibility and strength to support the heavy military pick-up weight while providing a relatively smooth ride.

In a 5,000-square-foot lab in Akron, Ohio, AEG works on different combinations of polymeric elastomeric materials to make the multiple carbon fiber hoops that are bonded to the carcass of the tire. Finding the right combination of hoop dimensions and materials is the challenge. A softer material provides good durability and flexibility but wears out sooner. A harder material lasts longer but also generates more heat.

Eventually, zero pressure tires will be tested by the military at Proving Grounds to demonstrate results of mine blasts and handling during obstacle encounters. Since the tire is still under development, there's no price tag. AEG is expected to develop a tire that costs the same or less than current military tires.

"AEG's motivation and driving force for this project are that AEG gets the privilege to be of help to save lives of our soldiers," said Abraham Pannikottu, Operations Manager at AEG who is also a Life member of GOPIO.

AEG started its operation in Akron, Ohio in 2000. The companyhas patents pending for the Zero Pressure tire technology. This tire company will help with manufacturing of commercial tires. As for commercial applications of the zero pressure design for run-flat tires, AEG is focusing its current efforts on the pick-up truck. However this technology eventually could be used on all-terrain vehicles, as well as mining and construction vehicles.

Indian-born Abraham has a mechanical engineering degree from Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (Surat, Gujrat). He later completed graduate studies in polymer science at the University of Akron. He has written several research articles on engineering applications of rubber. His group is also working on new innovative product such as US National Football League Helmet and Implantable Cost-effective Titanium Hip & Knee.

In 2006 Pentagon honored Pannikottu & his engineering group for designing an airless tire for the Stryker armored vehicle. This Pentagon award was for exceptional performance that exemplifies the goal of bringing innovative technologies to the soldier.

SOUTH AFRICAN NRI RECOGNIZED WITH PRESTIGIOUS INTERNAL AWARD

Prof. Suprakas Sinha Ray (42) recently bagged one of the most prestigious international awards for polymer processing. Ray, director of the CSIR/Department of Science and Technology (DST) National Centre for Nanostructured Materials (NCNSM) received the Morand Lambla Award (MLA) from the International Polymer Processing Society (IPPS) at its 29th conference in Nuremberg, Germany.

Prof. Ray joined South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 2006. At the time, there was little research activity in his field and he was tasked with putting together a group of researchers in the field of nanotechnology in 2007; the team has grown to about 50 staff members.

In remarking that centre had started from nothing in its 6-yr history. Prof. Ray's team is one of the most active research groups, thanks to unbelievable support from the CSIR and the DST. Nanotechnology in polymer science is used to improve the properties of plastics, to make them tougher, more   impermeable and less flammable.

"One of our big projects is to develop optimal nanostructure materials to reduce the weight of a car. Conventional composites (used for the dash board, etc.) consist of 30% to 40% fillers, for example, glass fiber, but if we use nanotechnology, the composite can be stronger with only 3% to 5% filler, reducing the total weight. Due to the rising fuel costs, every manufacturer works towards fuel efficiency and the way to do this, is by reducing weight'

For this Award, the 7 member jury looked at the researchers' work over several years, with impact over the last five years being most important. They also consider quality of publications & impact factor of journals where it was published.

Another prestigious recognition Ray had enjoyed was that he was rated one of the world's top 50 high impact chemists in 2011 out of approximately a million chemists who were recorded in journal publications indexed by Thomson Reuters. After receiving his PhD at the University of Calcutta, India in 2001, he completed three years of postdoctoral research at the Toyota Technological Institute in Japan.

When the CSIR offered him a job, Ray and his wife, Jayita Bandyopadhyay (MSc in nuclear physics and a PhD in chemical engineering) had been living in Canada where he was a postdoctoral scientist at the chemical engineering department of the University of Laval in Québec City.

A PIO MUSICAL 'REVOLUTIONARY' RETURNS TO SA FROM USA

Shunna 'Sonny' Pillay quoted famous South African playwright and actor Athol Fugard saying 'I went out to the world to see what I was made of'. This is exactly what Sonny lived up to when he recently returned to his country of birth from his homes in Connecticut and New York to perform besides internationally renowned South African musician Hugh Masekela for the musical Panzee.

He speaks of himself and his contemporary friends such as Miriam Makeba and the aforementioned Masekela. In the fifties, Pillay was the only PIO amongst three friends began playing gigs at hotels. Everything from black American music to what was happening in Paris had an impact on what their improvised jazz and this genre of music welcomed Pillay within open arms. At one occasion, they performed something that the predominantly 'white audience in SA was not accustomed to and the 'house came down'.

Pillay became an overnight success as the only Indian in African jazz - something of an oddity given that in his company at the time were luminaries such as Dolly Rathebe, Dorothy Maseko and Ben Masinga. He was made famous by the black press. For quite a while thereafter he lived on the edge. The Union of SA Artists sent him to London in the 70's where a multimillion dollar deal fell through. Being gravely ill with TB, Pillay was at his lowest ebb. A while later, Pillay met Carole Manchester, a Yankee, and lived a blissful life for 33 years.

Pillay lost his dad when he was three years old, and as the only male, grew up in a home full of women. His talents was spotted by a Pompie Naidoo, owner  of Goodwill lounge where he was encouraged to follow his dream, which was in singing and music, which he did.

South Africa says 'welcome home' to one of her unsung PIO musical sons.

MIGRANT INDIANS AMONG THE MOST ENTERPRISING IN U.K.

Indians are among the most enterprising of Britain's migrant communities, a new data analysis report here has found.

As many as 456,073 migrants have launched a small or medium-sized business in Britain, according to the think tank Centre for Entrepreneurs and due diligence platform DueDil.

The report titled'Migrant Entrepreneurs: Building Our Businesses, Creating Our Jobs', found that migrant entrepreneurs are behind one in seven of all UK companies and that Irish, Indian, German, American and Chinese make up the top performing nationalities.

Ireland leads the charge with 48,854 founders running their own businesses across the UK, followed by India with 32,593 and Germany with 30,755.

Around half a million people from 155 countries have launched businesses in the UK and these migrant-founded companies are responsible for creating 14 per cent of all jobs, it said.

"The majority of the public appreciate the value of migrant entrepreneurs, yet our politicians and media send out negative signals that risk alienating this vital group of job creators," said Luke Johnson, Centre for Entrepreneurs chairman and serial entrepreneur.

"Given the huge contribution of migrant entrepreneurs, we are calling upon the media and politicians to join us in celebrating those who come to our country and launch businesses," he added.

The report coincides with a BBC revelation that the UK government held back a politically sensitive migrant impact report that suggested the impact of extra migrants on the country's workforce is weaker than what government has claimed.

According to the "Migrant Entrepreneurs" report, the entrepreneurial activity among the migrant community was found to be nearly double that of UK-born individuals, with 17.2 per cent having launched their own businesses, compared to 10.4 per cent of those born in Britain.

They are also, on an average, eight years younger than indigenous entrepreneurs at 44 years-old compared to 52.

This is despite the extra challenges they face, including access to finance and cultural and language barriers.

A YouGov survey undertaken for the report found that a significant proportion of the general public believe migrant entrepreneurs make a positive contribution to the UK (44 per cent) and a majority support the government's efforts to attract new migrant entrepreneurs (50 per cent).

This is despite the fact the public view immigration in a generally negative light and support a reduction in net immigration (68 per cent).

US LAWMAKERS URGE PENTAGON TO END BAN ON SIKHS SERVING IN ARMY

A group of 105 US lawmakershas urged the Pentagon to lift the presumptive ban on the Sikhs serving in the military by easing restrictions on beard, turbans, and other religious accoutrements.

"Given the achievements of these soldiers and their demonstrated ability to comply with operational requirements while practicing their faith, we believe it is time for our military to make inclusion of practicing Sikh Americans the rule, not the exception," the lawmakers said in a letter to US defense secretary Chuck Hagel.

Led by Congressmen Joe Crowley, vice-chair of the Democratic Caucus, and Rodney Frelinghuysen, Chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, the 105 members of the US House of Representatives requested that the US armed forces update their appearance regulations to once again allow Sikh Americans to serve while abiding by their articles of faith, such as wearing a turban or beard.

They said the Sikhs have served in the US army since World War I, and are permitted to serve in the armed forces of Canada and the UK, as well as key partner India.

The three Sikh Americans who have been granted individualized accommodations to serve in the US army wear turbans and maintain beards in a neat and conservative manner, both in accordance with operational requirements and their Sikh religious beliefs.

They are also able to wear protective equipment, including helmets and gas masks, in conformity with safety requirements.

Sikh Coalition applauded lawmaker's move calling for an end to the presumptive ban on devout Sikh service in the US military.

"Today's letter from Congress is a big step forward in our campaign to ensure equal opportunity for Sikh Americans in the US military," said Rajdeep Singh, director of Law and Policy for the Sikh Coalition.

"Sikhs have proven time and again around the world that they are excellent soldiers. It's time for the Pentagon to realize that Sikh Americans are here to stay and that policies of exclusion are inevitably going to fail," Singh said.

-        Exhibition to display works of art of 168 participating artists, 9 invited artists &                    4 LKA produced films
-        Admission Free

New Delhi, 18th March, 2014: The intoxication of colors is yet to subside, the exaltation of love and expression is yet to pass, with Holi and it’s time again to paint our soul with colors of the art of 168 artists at the Lalit Kala Akademi’s 55th edition of National Exhibition of Art.

Theodore Dreiser said, “Art is the stored honey of the human soul, gathered on wings of misery and travail.” While our life runs aground in the grooves of cement, bricks, stone and steel, Lalit Kala Akademi (India’s premier Art Institution), after a gap of 20 years, brings the 55th National Exhibition of Art back to Delhi, to let it revel in the colours, tones and hues of human yearnings.

Oil, Acrylic, Canvas, Stone, Bronze, Charcoal, Etchings, Ceramic artwork are on display at the National Exhibition of Art. After a double screening by eminent Juries, artists from the entire country will display their work at the National Art Exhibition in Delhi from 20thMarch to 10th April, 2014 at the, Rabindra Bhawan Gallery (Mandi House). Works of 9 invited artists and four films will also form part of this exhibition.

The National award carries Prize Money of Rs 1 Lakh, a Plaque and a Certificate each. (The list of awardees is attached.)  The Akademi congratulated those chosen by the Jury and wished that they too, like earlier awardees including MF Hussain, NS Bendre, Gulam Mohammed Sheikh and many others will bring name to the country and add lustre to the Academy.

Dr K. K Chakravarty, Chairperson, Lalit Kala Akademi says “The 55th National Exhibition of Art looks at the world made by human beings in the eye and creates a spectrally heightened and distorted actuality, autonomous self-evolving structures, in tune with the transformative, leavening power of nature. The exhibition lends extraordinary meaning to ordinary objects by associating them in unforeseen permutations and combinations, in simultaneity and fusion.”

“It builds bridges between the corporeal and incorporeal, figurative and non-figurative, to express the inexpressible, and to communicate a sense of urgency for diagnosing and curing the radically fractured human condition. It reminds us that ‘hidden worlds connect to the things that hide them; within the red wood bark lies moss, under which are toads and insects: Tide pools connect us with unfathomable seas, which connect with our chromosomes’.

The works were chosen by a Screening Committee consisting of eminent personalities including, Mr Sachida Nagdev, Dr. Asharfi S. Bhagat, Mr Ajit Kumar Dubey, Mr Satish Sharma, Mr Aditya Arya , Mr H A Anil Kumar. A second-tier Jury for choosing the ten National Awardees from this selection has been done by another eminent jury comprising of Mr V Ramesh, Mr Ajay Kumar, Mr Deepak Kanal, Mr Deepak Banerjee, Mrs Shobha Broota, Mr S. Paul, Mr Suresh Jayaram and Mr Shrenik Jain.

Mr Ramakrishna Vedala, Secretary, Lalit Kala Akademi elucidatesthe methodology involved in choosing the works for the National Exhibition of Art “The works in the current exhibition merit attention on account of their challenging content, epitomizing creative features, individual commitment, discriminating quality of methods, materials used and more, so that the exhibition becomes a true representation of the dimensions of contemporary art thinking nationally.”

Penguin Books India
cordially invites you to the launch
of
The Candidate by Anirudh Bhattacharyya

About the Book

‘I can’t picture you surviving in Indian politics. Let me tell you the reasons: you have morals, too much integrity, and you lack an ego.’ Without a job, and a marriage on the rocks, the mild-mannered Jay Banerjee has no choice but to come back from the US to Delhi. A chance meeting with a childhood friend, Govardhan Ray, aka Raja—a neta with a scandal too many—plunges him into the seamy, madcap world of Indian politics.

The fight for the Narayanpore seat—a nondescript district in West Bengal—begins, and along with it, the process of discovering ‘the real India’. Jay’s challenge: to provide a ‘clean campaign with integrity’. Replete with colourful campaigns, media hullabaloo, cynical voters, goondas, chamchas and all the usual suspects, The Candidate is a breezy and humorous story of the great Indian election tamasha.

‘Environmental Histories: Pasts and futures’

20032014
Nehru Memorial Museum and Library

Environmental Histories:
Pasts and futures’

in association with
Prof. Michael Mann,
Humboldt-University, Berlin,
Germany
and the
German Research Foundation

Concept Note:

The epochal times we live in make the relations of histories and environments a major theme in studies of past ages and the more uncertain domains of the future. By asking when, why and how specific political, socio-economic or cultural choices reshaped the human environment, we can get a more rounded and holistic sense of our present dilemmas.

In any such endeavour, certain broad questions standout. How do perceptions of ecological change varies and contested as they often are intersect with the material changes themselves? How far are local knowledge and science based approaches more or less influential and why? How can long term or ‘deep’ histories interact with more conventional approaches focused on a few years or decades?

The conclave brings together scholars based mainly in India and Germany, countries with distinct if overlapping historical traditions. All are aware of the deep historic links of imperial forestry and natural history and the sciences in British imperial India with German science and administration. But well beyond this, the contrasts of an industrialized European major nation state and a former colony (and now emerging economy) throws up historical contrasts and similarities rich in insight. It aims to showcase specific and focused papers by engaged and active historians but in a manner that opens up dialogue and fresh enquiry. After all what we make of our environmental futures has a lot to do with rethinking our own histories.

The FISME Factor

President’s Message
” Public Procurement Policy for Micro and Small (MSEs) 2012 is undoubtedly a watershed development in MSME support initiatives. It is sad that most agencies not only have failed to inform MSEs about their procurement plans, but also have dragged their feet in extending even the basic facilities to MSEs whether it is exemption from earnest money or exemption from security deposits by successful tenderers. It looks highly unlikely that a mandatory procurement target of 20% from MSEs will be met by government agencies in such a situation. There is a need to make the Policy work for MSEs as was envisaged. “

Business Banter: Lessons from Entrepreneurs

Don’t let over-confidence hinder your success

- Jason Fell is the managing editor of Entrepreneur.com in New York
After starting and growing a company to early success, entrepreneurs can sometimes let confidence go to their heads. Not only can over-confidence be a turn off for others, it can blind you to important changes you need to make at your company. Being confident shouldn’t make you think you can do no wrong. When markets shift, you can’t always stay the course and ride the success you’ve enjoyed so far. A confident entrepreneur will know when to make the changes that will set his or her company up for success.

Stuck in neutral

The index of industrial production (IIP) numbers for January 2014, published on Wednesday, showed that industry was still stagnant. Production grew by a minuscule 0.1 per cent over January 2013, a hair’s breadth better than the revised 0.2 per cent estimated for December. More importantly, manufacturing, accounting for almost 80 per cent of the index, declined by 0.7 per cent. Looking at the different use-based segments within manufacturing, both capital goods and consumer durables, reflective of long-term spending commitments by businesses and consumers, declined in January – the former by 4.2 per cent and the latter by an even more dismal 8.3 per cent.

MPEDA’s co-branding drive for seafood exports

India’s seafood export industry, dominated by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and growing at 20 per cent a year, will soon get a shot in the arm. In a bid to help entrepreneurs, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) under the ministry of commerce is undertaking a major co-branding drive, which will promote the brand equity of Indian marine products in regulated markets. Seafood exports from India are expected to touch $4.3 billion in the current fiscal year and $10 billion a year by 2020, according to MPEDA.

Hardly any growth in industrial output for Jan; retail inflation tad lower in Feb

India’s industrial production just about reversed the trend in January, 2014 turning from a negative trend in December, 2013 but a mere growth of 0.1 per cent is no consolation as half of the industry segments continued to contract. For the April-January period, there was no growth in the Index of Industrial Production, though some glimmer of hope was visible in the form of slight fall in the retail inflation. The inflation based on consumer price index for February was a tad lower at 8.10 per cent from 8.79 per cent in January, 2014.

Exports may fall more as India loses preferential status in EU

The rupee has been on a winning streak since the start of this year. Despite the US cutting back its bond-buying programme, the rupee has held its own. In fact, it has appreciated 1.5 per cent over the past month, driven by steady foreign capital flows into Indian bonds and stocks The sharp improvement in the current account deficit (CAD) has contributed in equal measure to the rupee’s stability. Since last June, Indian exports have shown a pick-up, as India’s competitiveness improved with the rupee’s fall.

Nearly 15% SME foundries shut shop due to demand slump

Several small and medium-sized foundries across the country have been forced to stop production, owing to a demand slump. Industry insiders say that most of these units cater to automotive manufacturers and ancillaries, and that 10-15 per cent of them have either closed down or stopped production temporarily. About 80 per cent of India’s $12 billion foundry industry comprises SMEs, 15 per cent are medium-sized players and only five per cent are large units. Reena Bhagwati, joint managing director of Bhagwati Autocast Ltd and president of the Institute of Indian Foundrymen (IIF), said that while average capacity utilisation in the overall foundry industry is around 70 per cent, for those supplying to automotive players, especially manufacturers of heavy commercial vehicles and passenger cars, average utilisation is down to 50-55 per cent.

Climate change can run MSMEs out of biz

Most businesses, especially those belonging to the micro, small and medium enterprise sector are affected by the changing climate which causes damage to their premises and processes, so much so that, at times it runs them out of business, a report has said. This was stated by the Gujarat Institute of Competitiveness (GIC) which has now designed a project to help MSMEs prepare for changes in weather patterns and adapt to climate change. On the need for such a programme, “awareness about these risks among businesses still remains low,” Director, GIC, Jagat Shah said.

Educated farmers in Punjab venture into dairy farming

Worried over diminishing returns from small holdings in the state, young and educated farmers in Punjab with an entrepreneurial streak are venturing into commercial dairy farming. The farmers say that a commercial dairy farm gives them high returns compared with conventional agriculture on small land-holdings, which is proving unsustainable. There are about 6,000 progressive dairy farmers in Punjab and the state has more such farmers than any other Indian state, with farms varying in size from 10 to 500 high-yielding breeds of cows. Also, the daily production of milk by these farms is about 12-15 lakh litres.

Save Dissent to Save Democracy

THE rising instances of physical violence and threats against political opponents and the inability to accept dissent must raise huge concerns amongst all of us who see democracy as perhaps the really stellar achievement since Independence.
AAP’s attack on BJP headquarters and acts of arson committed under the very noses of their elite leadership; the attacks on Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in Gujarat in the last two days; the recent manhandling of the caretaker of journalist Siddharth Varadarajan’s house by some garden variety thugs; and the violence and threats meted out regularly to their political opponents by political parties is surely deplorable and condemnable. This is a fatally flawed trend which will destroy the very foundations of our democratic institutions if not pushed back with all the strength and condemnation that the civil society can mobilise.
Replaying the past
To begin with, it must be clarified that we should not jump to any premature and unfounded allegations against any particular political party or political leader as this will be simply wrong and not serve any purpose at all except to start a bout of mutual recriminations and finger- pointing.
It itself is dangerous as it effectively condones the violence by opponents comparing their dastardly act against the others.
It is not the level but the act itself which cuts at the root of our democracy.
The tendency for violently quelling political dissent and physically threatening one’s opponents has long history as democracy came to be established in a fundamentally feudal and unequal society.
Upper caste violence against the dalits was the norm in the fifties and sixties. I recall the early seventies when Sanjay Gandhi’s rise was accompanied with increasing instances of gangs of lumpen youth masquerading as Sanjay brigade threatening and attacking anyone who dared to voice her opposition to his high handedness. The consequence was the emergency and near derailment of our democracy. Subsequently, we saw the same tendency in an even stronger version during CPM’s long rule in West Bengal which was condoned by Bengali bhadralok like Jyoti Basu and leftist scholars who simply shut their eyes to the dehumanising violence of CPM dadas . It took a lot of bloodletting and violence to exorcise the fear in the West Bengal voters to liberate them from the dead hand of CPM rule. And unfortunately we have not seen the last of this. But we must resist lest the worst aspects of our feudal past overtake us and we see the replaying in even greater ferocity the worst aspects of human behaviour in the name of safeguarding our political views and lionising our chosen leaders. Violence or the implicit threat of violence will see us quickly descend into ungovernable chaos, which will take us towards fundamentalism or fascism, both of which are complete anathema to a civilised, multi- ethnic and multi- religious society that we proudly and rightly claim to be.
It is often argued by some political leaders that the threatening behaviour in public or increasingly these days in the social media by their supporters is spontaneous and un- directed. Consequently, it is argued it cannot be controlled by the party leadership.
Political parties’ role
But having experienced some of this in another context, I can testify to the trauma that it creates when day after long day one is bombarded by exactly the same threatening message repeated from different sources and persons, all completely unknown and appearing out of nowhere. We certainly do want to descend into the situation across our western borders where the line has long been crossed and political or ideological opponents are routinely eliminated to quell dissent and drive the fear deep into the hearts of the ordinary voters.
The onus of preventing any further slide down this very slippery and dangerous slope must lie squarely on the leaders of our major political parties. We cannot hope for it to come from the Left parties because their core ideology glorifies violence and at the very minimum calls for the combined use of parliamentary and unparliamentary means to secure political power. All the sophistry of the Karats and the bhadralok intellectuals cannot take away from this anti- democratic nature of their politics. The religious fundamentalists cannot also be expected to raise their voice against, let alone shun political violence as for them means justify the ends and howsoever deplorable they may be, the means receive the ultimate sanction of having ‘ served their chosen gods’ purpose.’
The good leader
Therefore, we have to look towards and urge the leaders of mainstream and regional political leadership, who avowedly support our democratic institutions, to come out strongly against this pernicious tendency of physically threatening their political opponents. I am sure that if the top leadership unambiguously and strongly voiced their opposition to such behaviour, the spontaneity of their supporters and their enthusiasm for browbeating their leader’s opponents will be curbed. The leader herself/ himself will have to chastise them or at the least request them from refraining from such behaviour. This must be done immediately by all those who are already nominated as or consider themselves as prime ministerial candidates.
There are several ways of evaluating a good democratic leader. Clearly he has to lead and not pander to the popular opinion for that will result in ‘ majoritarianism’. This will effectively destroy democracy, which survives on assuring the minority that it will be protect and its interest safeguarded.
The good leader will have to provide effective governance and take the responsibility for his government’s performance rather than take refuge in showcasing his personal integrity and honesty.
The good leader will also have to rise above sectional interests, especially those of individual businessmen and their cronies and be seen to in fact serve the national interest. But to safeguard democracy, our cherished and necessary institution, he will have to above all, be seen to graciously accept dissent and live with it. Good leadership apart, the leader who takes the lead in articulating his support for the right to dissent will surely secure an electoral gain at this time.

The CIA’s tortured past
From: ”Raha Wala, Human Rights First” <communications@humanrightsfirst.org> Fri, 21 Mar ’14 2:21a

To: Nksagar@rediffmail.com and others

Dear Naresh:
The pressure is mounting to declassify the Senate torture report.
Last week, Senator Dianne Feinstein came to the Senate floor and accused the CIA of spying on Senate intelligence committee staff responsible for investigating the CIA torture program. Senator Feinstein noted that she stands by the committee staff’s groundbreaking findings and that, by the end of this month, the Senate intelligence committee will vote on whether to send the report to the White House for declassification.
A vote to declassify may come as soon as next week.  Help us keep the momentum going. Sign our petition urging the Senate Intelligence Committee to declassify its torture report.
Last week, President Obama said that he is “absolutely committed to declassifying [the report] as soon as it is completed.” Even former CIA Chief Legal Officer John Rizzo, one of the architects of the CIA’s torture program, reiterated his support for declassification. He stated, “Everything needs to get out on the record. Let people judge. Let people decide and move on.”
Naresh, you deserve to know the truth about torture. Releasing the torture report will allow us to understand the consequences of the CIA’s torture program prevent our nation from returning to these ineffective and un-American practices.
Sincerely,
Raha Wala

____________________________________
The Urban Workshop series, held on last working Tuesday of every month, has completed a continuous series of forty nine workshops. For the fiftieth workshop, it is organising a panel discussion that reflects the multi-disciplinary nature of the workshop. It will draw on different disciplines to address a common question.
Today, in India, the city is arguably becoming a more salient focus of social inquiry. Historically, cities have been seen as sites of social emancipation – places where existing mores are questioned. They have also been centres of political expression, often, strongly enough to lead to changes in national political systems – a fact that we are often reminded of in today’s world. Increasingly too, they are being seen as the engines of growth, the loci around which benefits of agglomeration are driving increases in economic productivity, often intermingled with their role as home to the “creative class”. Yet, cities, especially in India, are also sites where it is often common to find inequality, deprivation and lack of opportunity.
So, what is the rationale for today’s city in India? शहर का मकसद क्या है? What kinds of meaning do city dwellers invest in and find in their city? How does this meaning differ across different residents of the city? How has this rationale evolved over time? These are the some of the questions that will be posed to the panel, and it is hoped that this will provoke a lively exchange of views.

Where are the solutions to these challenges in China, India, Japan, Hong Kong and the other economic juggernauts across Asia?

India ranks 54th in Trade Logistics Performance across Globe – World Bank

22032014
The World Bank in its report Connecting to Compete 2014: Trade Logistics in the Global Economy, shows the performance of countries across the world  on the basis of Logistics Performance Index (LPI) which  is an indicator of  on-the ground efficiency of trade supply chains, or logistics performance . The index ranks 160 countries depending on a number of aspects of global trade, including customs performance, infrastructure quality, and timeliness of shipments to reflect on the timeliness, cost and reliability of country’s execution of international trade.
According to the report, high-income countries dominate the top 10 rankings and also remained relatively unchanged since 2010. Germany is reported as the best performing country with an LPI score of 4.12 and followed by Netherlands , Belgium , United Kingdom , Singapore , Sweden , Norway , Luxembourg , United States , and Japan with an LPI score ranging from 4.05 to 3.91.
With an overall rank of 54, India with the LPI score of 3.08 is ranked 3rd amongst lower-middle income countries. India is also reported as the over performing trade logistics performance amongst the non high-income economies. The other over performing non high-income economies are Malaysia , South Africa , China , Thailand and Vietnam . However, India ’s trade logistic performance has exhibited a fall as compared with 2010 when LPI score of 3.12 was recorded for the country.

Note – The LPI index is a multidimensional assessment of logistics performance, rated on a scale from 1 (worst) to 5 (best). The six core components captured by the LPI survey are rated by respondents on a scale of 1–5, where 1 is very low or very difficult and 5 is very high or very easy. Ranks are given out of 160 countries.
Suggested strategies to improve logistics performance:
In low-income countries, the biggest gains typically come from improvements to infrastructure and basic border management. This might mean reforming a customs agency, but, increasingly, it means improving efficiency in other agencies present at the border, including those responsible for sanitary and phyto-sanitary controls. Often, multiple approaches are required.
Middle-income countries, by contrast, usually have fairly well-functioning infrastructure and border control. They generally see the biggest gains from improving logistics services, and particularly outsourcing specialized functions, such as transportation, freight-forwarding, and warehousing.
In high-income countries, there is a growing awareness of – and a demand for – “green logistics,” or logistics services that are environmentally friendly. In 2014, about 37 percent of LPI survey respondents shipping to OECD countries recognized a demand for environmentally friendly logistics solutions, compared with just 10 percent of those shipping to low-income destinations.

Indian Researchers Selected to Develop Next Generation Toilets

Indian Researchers Selected to Develop Next Generation Toilets

Indian and global researchers gather at 㒥invent the Toilet Fair: India䠴o discuss how to bring safe sanitation to the 2.5 billion people who lack access

New Delhi, March 22, 2014缯span>Six Indian innovators were selected today to contribute to the development of sanitation solutions as part of the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge: India. From a pool of 108 applications, these projects were chosen following an extensive, rigorous selection process by an expert committee.

The 㒥invent the Toilet Challenge: India䠩s a collaborative effort of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India; Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), A Government of India Enterprise; and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to fund Indian researchers to develop innovative, safe and affordable sanitation technologies. This program is an India-specific program modeled on the Gates FoundationⳊ global Reinvent the Toilet Challenge. The DBT and the Gates Foundation invested a combined US$2 million, equally split, to support Indian investigators to drive research, development, and production of 㮥xt-generation toilets.伯span>

The grants were announced today by Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan, Secretary DBT & Chairman, BIRAC at the 㒥invent the Toilet Fair: India䬠an event held in New Delhi that showcased innovative products and approaches that aim to bring safe, affordable and sustainable sanitation to those who need it most.

Co-hosted by the DBT and the Gates Foundation, the fair included more than 45 exhibitors representing 15 nations and featured projects to stimulate discussion among a diverse group of stakeholders working to improve global sanitation. These include efforts to create toilets that are not connected to water, sewer or electricity; improve the collection, treatment and disposal of human waste; address behavior change; and raise awareness of this critical issue for governments, stakeholders and local communities.

The fair was an opportunity to recognize IndiaⳠleadership and commitment to improving child health and fostering innovative solutions to persistent development challenges. It also was an opportunity to hasten manufacturing opportunities in India of existing sanitation products.

ㅦfective and comprehensive sanitation seems an impossible dream for India,䠳aid Professor K. Vijay Raghavan. 㙥t today we see a congruence of new and applicable science and technology, its affordability, and sustainable implementation. This congruence is a great opportunity which we cannot afford to let slip. By implementing effective solutions in each kind of social context, big problems can be dealt with in small units and be catalysts for scaling up. By working together to hit big barriers at the right place and the right way, they can crumble and the impossible can become real.伯span>

Also announced today at the fair, the Department of Science and Technology for the Republic of South Africa is committing ZAR 30 million to field test technologies developed as part of the Gates FoundationⳠglobal Reinvent the Toilet Challenge in rural communities and schools. The foundation is contributing US $1 million to support this testing.

ス applying creative thinking and new approaches to sanitation challenges, we can improve peopleⳠlives. And we have no doubt that these new partnerships with India and South Africa will help us achieve this,䊠said Brian Arbogast, director of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. 㗥 believe that with governmental leadership, new business models and innovation, we can dramatically increase the progress made in tackling this global sanitation crisis.䠼/span>

The fair was an opportunity for the16 global Reinvent the Toilet Challenge (RTTC) grantees, funded by the Gates Foundation, to exhibit progress and demonstrate project prototypes.

㗥 are impressed by the progress the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge grantees have made,䠳aid Arbogast. ㏵r goal is to fund the development of complete solutions solutions that are affordable, that work, and that people want to use. Our grantees have been working on aggressive timelines and we are very encouraged by the progress of these grantees have made since the first fair in August 2012. 㼯span>

GAIL executes MoU with Chubu Electric of Japan for joint LNG procurement

24032014
Seoul, March 24, 2014: During the Gastech Conference being held in Seoul, South Korea, GAIL announced having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc., Japan (Chubu) on 21.03.2014. Under the MoU, GAIL and Chubu shall mainly explore possibilities for collaboration in the area of joint LNG procurement. Besides, the two companies will also seek to collaborate on shipping optimization.
Chubu and GAIL are large LNG importers having considerable synergy between their LNG business profiles. It is assessed that with GAIL joining hands with Chubu for jointly pursuing LNG procurement and other allied business opportunities, such a collaboration shall augment GAIL’s efforts to aggressively source LNG volumes on competitive terms and would be a win-win proposition for both companies.
GAIL’s latest move is also in sync with the company’s recent efforts in establishing and promoting Asia LNG Forum, a sort of Asian LNG buyers’ club. GAIL is also actively working towards establishing a regional gas trading hub for Asia as well as an Asian gas index.
This MoU with Chubu is yet another effort by GAIL towards bridging the gap in demand supply of natural gas in the Indian market. This is in addition to other initiatives of GAIL towards LNG sourcing, creating LNG regasification infrastructure, reserving liquefaction tolling capacity in overseas projects and augmenting transmission capacity significantly over the next few years. The remittance volumes are expected to pick up further with the Reserve Bank of India announcing direct-to-account foreign inward remittance facilities.
The move will also help to curb the inflow of money through illegal routes.

DID’s L’il Duo Anudita-Anushka floor Varun Dhawan!

27032014

The naughty twosome demand a horse ride on host Jay Bhanushali’s back

They are barely knee-high but they are taller than most in terms of talent. 11 year old Kolkata girl Anudita Paul and 8 year old Anushka Chetri of Darjeeling danced flawlessly to Banarsiya from Ranjhanaa and swept the judges and the audience off their feet at the shoot of an upcoming episode of ‘Lifebuoy DID L’il Masters Season 3’. What’s more, they even had the celebrity visitor of the day – none other than the cute heartthrob Varun Dhawan on his knees in front of them!

No sooner did they finish their performance, than judge Ahmed Khan sprang to his feet, ran over to them and gifted them a giant teddy bear. Equally overwhelmed by their energy, grace and spirit was the hunky Junior Dhawan who was present on the sets to promote his upcoming film ‘Main Tera Hero’. Kneeling in front of the young ladies, he looked like he was about to propose to them or give them a bunch of flowers, but much to everyone’s amusement, Varun presented the girls with an apple each. Prodding the girls to cultivate healthy eating habits, he tried coaxing them to finish the apples in front of him. But the girls were too excited on seeing him to bother with apples! They caught him completely off-guard when they jumped up into his arms at the same time … Being the fit, gym bunny he is, Varun effortlessly swung them around in his arms.

Varun Dhawan was not the only man Anudita-Anushka targeted at this week’s shoot of the kid’s dance reality show. They next decided it was time to turn show host Jay Bhanushali into a horse. Insisting that they both ride on his back, the two girls had a ball even as Jay huffed and puffed his way all over the stage. As if this wasn’t tiring enough for Jay, Geeta decided she wasn’t one to be left behind. So, she went up on stage and sat on Jay’s back too, asking him for a horse ride. Poor Jay seemed almost crushed under Geeta, but had no choice but to oblige.

Watch the super talented brat-pack of ‘Lifebuoy DID L’il Masters Season 3’ bring the house down with their bachchagiri as Varun Dhawan & Ileana D’cruz come visiting on Saturday, 29th March and singer Mika Singh pays a visit on Sunday, 30thMarch at 9 PM, only on Zee TV.

Ileana’s diet goes for a toss on the sets of DID Lil Masters Season 3!

Mika gifts his watch to Mithun Da
on the sets of DID Lil Masters Season 3!

We have numerous instances of how Bollywood stars have showered their co-stars and friends with expensive gifts … the latest one to join the gang is hit machine Mika Singh. Mika who is a big fan of DID Lil Masters and its adorable l’il contestants, recently made an appearance on the show. He danced and sang with the kids, playing cute li’l pranks on the l’il ones.

A huge fan of Mithun Da right since his childhood, Mika grooved to a medley of the former superstar’s popular songs. He was so overwhelmed to meet Dada and to shake a leg with him that as a token of love, he gave his expensive watch to Dada! Initially, Mithun Da was a bit reluctant to accept  it from him but Mika insisted that he has immense respect for Dada and it was his way of expressing his love for him…After much persistence, Dada accepted the watch from Mika…Everyone on the sets appreciated this sweet gesture..

Mika said, “It’s been a dream come true to spend time with Dada, dance with him, sing for him … The time I spent on the sets of DID L’il Masters was absolutely delightful. I know Dada doesn’t accept gifts easily, but it meant a lot to me to give him something that belonged to me. So I took off my watch after my performance and insisited that Dada accepts it. Even though it would look like I have gifted Dada something, I am obliged that Dada accepted my l’il gift.”

Watch the kids drive Mika mad with their adorable antics and watch the singer join them in all the bachchagiri!

Catch these L’il dance ke baap’s bring the house down with singer Mika Singh in a special episode of Lifebuoy DID L’il Masters on Sunday, 30th March at 9 pm only on Zee TV.

Congress moves EC against ‘Har Har Modi’ slogan

Cong moves EC against
Congress on Thursday moved the Election Commission against BJP for using ‘Har Har Modi’ slogan in Varanasi from where Narendra Modi is contesting the Lok Sabha polls, saying use of religion is against the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct.
Demanding de-recognition of BJP and action against Modi, Congress said despite the opposition party denying that ‘Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi’ is its official slogan, party workers in Varanasi continue to use it. Congress said Modi addressed a public rally in Varanasi where the portrait of Lord Shiva was used as a backdrop of the stage, which is not permissible under the Model Code.
“Lord Shiva or Mahadev and the ancient Kashi Vishwanath temple at Varanasi have religious sanctity throughout the world. Hindus and all devotees of Lord Mahadev chant ‘Har Har Mahadev, Ghar Ghar Mahadev’ with deep sense of devotion to seek blessings of the Lord. No human being can replace Lord Mahadev in the said chant,” the Congress memorandum signed by K C Mittal of its Legal Department read.
Congress alleged that use of the slogan seems to be part of BJP’s strategy to “present” Modi as Lord Mahadev to exploit religious sentiments of people for electoral gains.
Referring to media reports, it claimed that BJP has organised 400 mobile vans with LCD TVs installed, along with ‘Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi’ slogan.
It said BJP has now come up with a new slogan ‘Dil mein Modi, ghar mein Modi, Kashi ke kan kan mein Modi (Modi in every heart, Modi in every home; Modi everywhere in Kashi).’
“The new slogan also aims at arousing religious sentiments and feelings of the people…’Kan kan mein Bhagwan (God is omnipresent)’ is a well known religious slogan…” the memorandum said.
It claimed the BJP’s official slogan “Abki baar, Modi sarkar (this time Modi government)” too cannot be used as it is “unconstitutional and undemocratic”.
“In Indian democracy, the system of political parties alone has a legal sanction to form government and not any individual,” it said.

Modi hiding facts on President’s rule in Delhi

27032014
Mr Modi hiding facts on President’s rule in Delhi From: aap party <aapmediacell4@gmail.com> Thu, 27 Mar ’14 3:54pTo:

BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Mr Narendra Modi has made an unsuccessful attempt to mislead the people of Delhi by distorting and hiding facts about the imposition of President’s rule in the national capital.
Mr Modi, in his speech on Wednesday evening betrayed nervousness by presenting his half baked facts about the Delhi assembly and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The Gujarat chief minister referred to Delhi being indirectly ruled by the Congress through its appointed Lieutenant Governor, despite having been routed in the December assembly elections and blamed the AAP for this situation.
Mr Modi, however, conveniently chose not to spell out the BJP’s stand on the imposition of President’s rule in Delhi. His party has been surprisingly silent on the issue since February 14 and the people of the national capital are eagerly awaiting the BJP’s response before the Supreme Court on March 31.
It is the AAP which has challenged the Congress-led UPA’s central government decision of keeping the assembly in suspended animation in the Supreme Court and not Mr Modi and his party, despite a volley of irresponsible allegations levelled by him.
If Mr Modi and his party are seriously concerned about Delhi being under President’s rule then what has prevented the BJP so far in making its stand public on whether it wants fresh assembly elections or not ?
Did the BJP’s Delhi unit and central leadership not inform its Prime Ministerial candidate that its MLAs had joined hands with the Congress in the Delhi assembly on February 14 to defeat the introduction of the Janlokpal bill by the AAP government ?
Is Mr Modi unaware that his party’s Delhi unit has so far shied away from expressing any opinion on the decision of the Arvind Kejriwal cabinet’s recommendation to the Lieutenant Governor to dissolve the state assembly when it resigned after its proposal on Janlokpal was defeated in the assembly ?
Mr Modi is merely shedding crocodile tears on Delhi being under President’s rule since the BJP helped the Congress-led UPA government in getting the interim budget for the capital passed in the Parliament, despite the fact that it included many anti-people measures.
Mr Modi and his party should make public their stand on whether they want fresh assembly elections in Delhi or not and whether they agree with the union home ministry’s affidavit submitted in the Supreme Court that there is a possibility of the BJP attempting to form a government in Delhi ?
Why is the BJP hesistant to come out clean on this issue ? Is it afraid of facing the electorate of Delhi ?
The AAP will not allow the BJP to spread misinformation on the issue of people of Delhi being denied their democratic right to elect a new government.
The AAP will expose the BJP and Congress attempts to keep Delhi under President’s rule and will take its fight to the people, who have suffered due to the unholy alliance between these two parties.

CBI files 2nd chargesheet in coal scam case before Delhi Court

27032014

Ahead of a Supreme Court hearing tomorrow, CBI today filed its second charge sheet in the coal scam before a Delhi court, naming Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Darda, Nagpur-based AMR Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd and others as accused for fraudulently acquiring coal blocks.
According to the CBI sources, the accused, including Darda and his son Devendra, were chargesheeted for the offences under sections 120-B of criminal conspiracy read with 420 of cheating of the IPC and under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The CBI, in its FIR, had named AMR Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd, its directors Arvind Kumar Jayaswal, Manoj Jayaswal, Ramesh Jayaswal and Devendra Darda, son of Vijay Darda, alongwith unknown public servants of Coal Ministry and other unknown persons as accused in the case.
Regarding AMR Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd, the CBI had said in its FIR that the firm, in its application form for allocation of coal blocks, had fraudulently concealed the fact that its group companies had previously been allocated five coal blocks.
The chargesheet has been filed a day before the CBI would be informing the Supreme Court about the status of its investigations into the five cases registered by the agency in 2012.

Citizen a mute spectator in this dance of democracy

27032014
Below is NNFI’s view of the state of affairs.
India’s politics have become murkier with each Lok Sabha election, and the run-up to each Lok Sabha election has seen ever-worsening behaviour by our politicians. This year we are witnessing new lows. The entire focus is on mud-slinging, with the ruling UPA benefitting from its control over the state machinery to discredit and or disable political opponents. Positive debates on how to make the nation prosperous have been discarded.
As before, criminals are being fielded by all parties, due to their ability to win with muscle and power. Despite promises of promoting only clean candidates, tickets are given to law breakers to become law makers, many even charged with heinous crime.
Again as before we are witnessing defections and cross overs by opportunists.
The marked difference this time is the projected downturn in the fortunes of Congress and its UPA alliance partners. If the crystal-ball gazers are proved right, we may witness a major disintegration of the once great Congress. The sole responsibility for this terminal illness of Congress lies with the UPA chairperson, her family and close associates who have a stranglehold over the entire Congress hierarchy.
Politicians both central as well as regional regard the nation their personal fiefdom, and do not hesitate to increase their personal wealth from funds earmarked for development or looting the nation’s natural resources. All critics and dissenters, including whistle blowers who dare to raise their voice, are decisively silenced.
State machinery is readily used by those in power to intimidate political opponents and to silence dissent amongst allies. The systematic destruction of state institutions (internal and external security, audit etc.) to subvert any challenge has resulted in the destruction of the very fabric of our democracy and left the nation in a very precarious condition. For a healthy democracy a strong and trustworthy opposition along with strong autonomous bodies, are a fundamental necessity for our democracy to function in the nation’s interest as well keeping the nation and its citizens secure and prosperous.
Congress today stands totally rattled by the NaMo wave sweeping a nation tired of the unfettered corruption and brazen loot of national resources unleashed during UPA 1 and 2. This is compounded by the impotence of governance, burden of high prices and a total disregard for the wellbeing of the aam admi.
In desperation to hold on, Congress today has only one agenda and that is to stop Narendra Modi in any manner possible. To achieve this objective every effort is being made to use the communal card and brand Modi dangerous for the minorities (i.e Muslims) – in order to secure the Muslim vote. It is also allegedly propping up AAP to cut into the BJP votes.
Congress (or UPA with its allies) controls all the investigative and enforcement agencies (e.g. CBI). It has nurtured a pliable judiciary to serve its purpose. With all the state machinery at its beck and call it believes it is well placed to carry on fooling the electorate with trumped up charges against opponents to ensure continuity of its hold on Parliament and prevent its own evil deeds being exposed. No Congress leader has so far been convicted of involvement in the Sikh massacre, whereas many from BJP are facing prosecution following the Gujrat riots.
How well Congress succeeds in weakening the NaMO surge is proving  unpredictable. Uncertainty is compounded by the AAP effect. The nation however needs to give a decisive mandate to whoever comes in next, to provide a stable government – but without further influence of UPA.
Judging by the results in Delhi and other states where people have recently voted, it is increasingly evident that Congress is on the way out. Its leaders realising their plight are showing signs of desperation, fighting for safe seats or jockeying for a safe passage to the Rajya Sabha. The UPA in desperation has adopted a scorched earth policy – bribing the electorate with freebies without concern for how these are going to be paid for. The aim appears to be to create a huge burden on the next occupant of 7 Race Course Road, with little concern for the future of the nation.
BJP which provides the only credible opposition has had its fortune bolstered ever since it adopted Modi as its PM candidate. But due to its association with RSS, BJP is branded a Hindutva party and although with Modi at the helm it has consolidated the Hindu votes, but sadly not done enough to stem the alienation of the Muslim minority who are constantly bombarded with negative propaganda by UPA to create an atmosphere of fear and mistrust. Today it is not seen as an inclusive party – a necessity in our secular democracy. As a consequence of this branding, BJP is forced to emphasise on a developmental record of its PM candidate in Gujarat, and a promise to roll out the same strong progressive model for the rest of the nation. Businesses and investors appear to welcome this and a decisive mandate for NDA is expected to boost India’s fortunes for the better.
Modi is a strong, determined, very ambitious and an autocratic leader who has built up a reputation of delivering through good governance. He is showing a no nonsense approach in his choice of allies, giving of tickets and consolidating his hold on the party machinery.
Modi’s Hindutva credentials due to the RSS link, do give a cause for concern to the many ‘good citizens of India and many have raised their concern about him as the next PM. Every political party in India has been milking the minority vote bank and they in turn have been extracting their pint of blood knowing full well the importance of their vote to retain a hold on government. Muslim minority has been used and abused by all parties and it appears they are happy to be used so. There has never been any program aiming at equality for all citizens, as guaranteed in the Constitution. Many whose thinking is clouded by the secular/communal debate fail to realise that India and Hinduism is and will always remain secular and open to all religions, and that Congress alone over the years has done far more to destroy the secular nature of the nation.
BJP further suffers from governance credibility, at the centre. It has had only a short stint to prove its credentials during the 67 years of independence of India. Under Atal Behari Vajpayee the BJP’s economic policies gave a boost to India and moved it away from the licence raj.
BJP’s actions to open up the economy under Vajpayee were short lived. The UPA soon re-introduced policies under which only a favoured few could progress by leaps and bounds. BJP also suffers the stigma of the Babri Masjid demolition and 2002 riots in Gujarat. It has not done enough to appease and win back the Muslim trust and thus allowed itself to be blackmailed by a desperate Congress. These two issues continue to haunt BJP and Modi today.
Congress has always been well placed to generate negative publicity for its opponents to ensure its continued stranglehold on governance. It has even used every means to scuttle developmental work in states not controlled by it, whilst it carried on schemes to loot the nation. Sonia its undisputed leader and today an unconstitutional authority, has files detailing weak points on every one with the help of agencies such as CBI and this she does not hesitate to exploit whenever there is dissent amongst potential allies and rivals within. This is akin to a mafia controlling the nation.
Sonia’s sister in-law Maneka asked some very apt questions at a recent rally. “She came with no dowry or any other form of wealth but is today ranked as the 6th richest woman in the world. Where and how did she accumulate such enormous wealth?” she asks. As Maneka explained “this comes from looting your and my money, and our national resources” Yet the vast majority of India’s citizenry is unaware of such antecedents because they are either too burdened by the struggle for survival or are too much in awe of the Nehru dynasty. The Muslim minority conveniently ignores negative facts about Congress leadership, because of the fear factor ingrained in their thinking due to Modi being projected as a mass murderer.
AAP the new entrant, came in with a noble agenda of ridding the nation of corruption so that developmental funds and the nation’s natural resources are utilised for the benefit of all the citizens and not a chosen few. AAP has no religion based politics or any other divisive plank. Its leaders established their credentials under the Anna movement and their pursuance of a citizen centric Lok Pal to act against the evil of corruption. AAP raised hopes and awakening amongst the downtrodden and in Delhi Assembly elections it almost secured a full mandate to govern to every-one’s surprise.  In this achievement it suddenly reinforced the belief in millions of voters that change for the better was possible through the ballot box.  It united all the citizens under its non-divisive banner. It changed the political thinking in the country, with the established parties totally thrown off course not knowing how to deal with this new menace. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi even adopted many of the practices initiated by AAP – grass roots interaction to listen and understand the real issues of the poor from rural and tribal areas.
In Delhi, since no party had a clear mandate, AAP with tactical support from Congress was given a chance to prove itself. But it failed miserably in the eyes of the literate voter. It made promises and commitments it must have known it could never have been able to deliver on. Its motley bunch of amateur MLAs proved a further liability, continuing as activists rather than graduating to governance mode and proceeding sensibly to deliver against the odds which they knew were stacked against them. Realising the mistake, they looked for and found an unconvincing exit from governance – “if we cannot deliver Lok Pal we do not wish to be in governance”. They always knew that without police, land and an ability to pass laws in Delhi, they could do little in many areas crucial to the aam admi (law and order, jobs, burden of price rises etc). So having quit, they decided to focus on the Lok Sabha elections with the aim of capturing a significant mandate to be able to pursue their agenda (and perhaps to help Congress by cutting the Modi votes). But by not delivering sustainable benefits to Delhi, not launching investigation against Sheila or her administration, and taking support from Congress, indulging in activism when in government, has seriously damaged the credibility of this group. Furthermore some of AAPs economic policies have allegedly left many in industry worried about its disastrous effects. They should have remained focussed to a narrow anti-corruption plank.
The serious negativity (alleged alliance with Congress) which became evident early in the 49 day stint, was their lack of action against Congress. Thus making them Congress stooges in the public eye. A branding difficult to shake off, however hard they persuade people otherwise. The belief that they are indeed working for Congress is further strengthened by the way their total focus remains on Modi. By  cutting into the Modi vote makes them an obvious stooge in the hands of Congress which no doubt hopes to achieve what it did in 2009 in Andhra to help bring YSR Congress back with the help of Chiranjeevi who played the same anti-corruption tune as Kejriwal, to be rewarded later with a cabinet berth.
AAPs success in cutting Modi’s seat share will be disastrous for the nation. The country needs a stable government, with few coalition constraints, to be able to deliver, and this can only come from a decisive mandate for Modi’s BJP (NDA).
Where does this leave the citizen of India? Criminality is not decreasing from any party (except AAP). Opportunism continues with defections and realignments to win a Lok Sabha seat at any cost. Politics remains closed for ‘good’ people. So what should you and I do?
-cast your vote, do not waste it
-learn about your candidate’s antecedents
-vote sensibly keeping the future of the nation uppermost rather than political ideologies
-Use NOTA to reject all candidates if you do not trust any.
Faced with a Hobson’s choice the voter needs to make an informed logical choice to bring in a stable government.

The winners are chosen by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the ultimate sports jury, made up of 46 of the greatest living sportsmen and sportswomen. Proceeds from the Laureus World Sports Awards directly benefit and underpin the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Since its inception, Laureus has raised €60 million for projects which have improved the lives of millions of young people.
Sebastian Vettel’s success was particularly satisfying for the young German racer, who had been nominated five times for a Laureus Award, before finally winning. His fourth straight World Championship in 2013 saw him join motor racing legends Juan Manuel Fangio, Michael Schumacher and Alain Prost, who all won at least four times, but he did it more quickly than them – at just 26 years and 116 days.
Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Missy Franklin was the sensation of the World Championships in Barcelona, becoming the first woman swimmer in history to win six gold medals at a single World Championships – three individual and three relay – at the age of just 18. She continues to refuse prize money and endorsements so that she can maintain her amateur status in college.
Bayern Munich were presented with the Laureus World Team of the Year Award after becoming the first football club to complete the treble of UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup. Six of their players were nominated for the FIFA Player of the Year Award: Philipp Lahm, Thomas Mueller, Manuel Neuer, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Spain’s Marc Márquez was presented with the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year Award after becoming the youngest ever MotoGP world champion, at 20 years 266 days. He also made history by becoming the youngest winner of a Grand Prix, in Austin in April, at 20 years 63 days.
It was Márquez’ first Laureus Award, but his fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal secured his third Laureus Statuette, when he won the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award, returning after a seven-month absence because of injury to win the French Open and US Open Grand Slam titles and regain his No 1 world ranking.
France’s Marie Bochet, aged 19, won the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award after becoming the first athlete to complete a Grand Slam of all five events at one Alpine Skiing World Championships.
Britain’s BMX star Jamie Bestwick, now based in the United States, won the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award after becoming the only athlete in X Games history to win eight straight gold medals, two more than legends such as Tony Hawk and Shaun White.
The Laureus World Sports Academy presented two additional discretionary Awards. The Laureus Spirit of Sport Award was won by the Afghanistan Cricket Team, who qualified for the Cricket World Cup for the first time in their history, and the Laureus Sport for Good Award was presented to Magic Bus, the sports-based community project in India.
The Awards Ceremony was held at the Istana Budaya, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was hosted by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Oscar and Grammy winner Jamie Foxx performed to the star-studded audience. German actor Daniel Brühl, who played Niki Lauda in the film Rush, was present along with Chinese supermodel and actress Du Juan.
The members of the Laureus World Sports Academy present were: Giacomo Agostini, Bobby Charlton, Sebastian Coe, Nadia Comaneci, Deng Yaping, Kapil Dev, Mick Doohan, Sean Fitzpatrick, Dawn Fraser, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Tony Hawk, Michael Johnson, Franz Klammer, Edwin Moses (Chairman), Ilie Nastase, Alexey Nemov, Morné du Plessis, Hugo Porta, Mark Spitz, Daley Thompson and Steve Waugh.
Other sports guests included:
Vitor Baia, Robert Baker, Kenny Belaey, Jamie Bestwick, Marie Bochet, Ronald de Boer, Annabelle Bond, Daniel Brühl, Bob Burnquist, Eric Cantona, Fabio Capello, Dan Carter, Lee Chong Wei, David Coulthard, Johan Cruyff, Nicol David, Deng Yaping, Du Juan, Paulo Ferreira, Nacho Figueras, Emerson Fittipaldi, Missy Franklin, Maya Gabeira, Stephanie Gilmore, Ruud Gullit, Lewis Hamilton, Raphael Holzdeppe, Nico Hülkenberg , Philip Köster, Michael Laudrup, Tegla Loroupe, Steve McManaman, Marc Márquez, Felipe Massa, Gaizka Mendieta, Luis Milla, Hidetoshi Nakata, Antonis Nikopolidis, Sophie Pascoe, Nico Rosberg, Sarah Louise Rung, Axel Schulz, Jimmy Spithill, Angelika Timanina, Sebastian Vettel.
Among other guests present were Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia; YB Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, Malaysia Minister for Youth and Sports; YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri, Malaysia Minister of Tourism and Culture.
The Awards were announced in seven categories. The winners are:
Laureus World Sportsman of the Year: Sebastian Vettel
Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year: Missy Franklin
Laureus World Team of the Year: Bayern Munich
Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year: Marc Márquez
Laureus World Comeback of the Year: Rafael Nadal
Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability: Marie Bochet
Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year: Jamie Bestwick
There were two additional Awards: the Laureus Spirit of Sport Award was presented to the Afghanistan Cricket Team and the Laureus Sport for Good Award was presented to Magic Bus, the sports-based community project in India.

NOTES TO EDITORS
The first Patron of Laureus was Nelson Mandela. At the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards in 2000, he said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can awaken hope where once there was only despair.” This has become the philosophy of Laureus; the driving force behind its work.
Laureus is a universal movement that celebrates the power of sport to bring people together as a force for good. Laureus is composed of three core elements – the Laureus World Sports Academy, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Laureus World Sports Awards – which collectively celebrate sporting excellence and use sport as the means to promote social change.
The Laureus World Sports Awards is the premier global sports awards honouring the greatest sportsmen and women across all sports each year. The winners are selected by the ultimate sports jury – the 46 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, the living legends of sport honouring the great athletes of today. The Awards are presented at an annual Awards Ceremony, attended by global figures from sport and entertainment, which is broadcast to 120 countries and territories.
The Laureus Academy Members volunteer their services as global ambassadors for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which was set up to promote the use of sport as a tool for social change. The Foundation addresses social challenges through a worldwide programme of sports related community development initiatives. Since its inception, Laureus has raised over €60 million for projects which have helped to improve the lives of more than one-and-a-half million young people.
The mission of the Laureus Foundation is to use sport as the means to combat some of the world’s toughest social challenges facing young people today such as juvenile crime, gangs, HIV/AIDS, discrimination, social exclusion, landmines awareness and health problems like obesity. The Academy is supported in its work by the members of the Laureus Ambassadors programme, a select group of current and retired sportsmen and sportswomen who have achieved sporting greatness, plus non-sporting personalities who have made significant contributions to the sporting community during their careers.
The members of the Laureus World Sports Academy are: Giacomo Agostini, Marcus Allen, Franz Beckenbauer, Boris Becker, Ian Botham, Sergey Bubka, Bobby Charlton, Sebastian Coe, Nadia Comaneci, Yaping Deng, Marcel Desailly, Kapil Dev, Mick Doohan, David Douillet, Emerson Fittipaldi, Sean Fitzpatrick, Dawn Fraser, Cathy Freeman, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Mika Häkkinen, Tony Hawk, Mike Horn, Miguel Indurain, Michael Johnson, Kip Keino, Franz Klammer, Dan Marino, Edwin Moses (Chairman), Nawal El Moutawakel, Robby Naish, Ilie Nastase, Martina Navratilova, Alexey Nemov, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Morné du Plessis, Hugo Porta, Steve Redgrave, Vivian Richards, Monica Seles, Mark Spitz, Daley Thompson, Alberto Tomba, Steve Waugh and Katarina Witt.
There is a two-part voting process to find the winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards. Firstly, a Selection Panel of the world’s leading sports editors, writers and broadcasters from over 120 countries votes to create a shortlist of six Nominations in various categories, including Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year, Laureus World Team of the Year, Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year and Laureus World Comeback of the Year. Then the members of the Laureus World Sports Academy vote by secret ballot to select the Award winners from the shortlist. The Laureus Academy Members also vote for the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disabilityand the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year, the Nominations for which are made by specialist panels.

Moreover, Mercedes-Benz has been actively supporting professional and amateur sport for decades and has become established as a dependable partner in the fields of motor sport, football, golf, horse riding and tennis. Mercedes-Benz is a Global Partner of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Being ranked as the 10th most popular travel destination in the world by UNWTO and the 4th best shopping destination in the world by CNN, and 2014 being the Visit Malaysia Year, Malaysia definitely is the most suitable host for Laureus World Sports Awards 2014.

Gujarat model not needed: Rahul

27032014

BJP following politics of anger, Guj model not needed: Rahul
Rahul Gandhi has accused BJP of unleashing the politics of anger before elections by pitting Hindus against Muslims and the rich against poor and said the ‘Gujarat model’ cannot be imposed on the country.
Terming as “marketing exercise” media reports of a likely BJP victory in the polls, Gandhi said this balloon floated by BJP will burst when votes are counted as it did in 2004 and 2009 when Congress had been written off by pollsters.
“BJP’s politics is about two things. First, pit Hindus against Muslims, the rich against the poor and people of Maharashtra against those from UP. Just before the elections, riots started in UP.
“Second, they fail to see the pain of the poor. So they talk of things like ‘India Shining’ which I will never because I meet you everyday and understand your suffering,” he told a public meeting in Sonitpur district of Assam on Thursday.
India Shining was the campaign theme of the then NDA government in 2004 elections in which it was roundly defeated.
Congress, he said, believed in politics of love and empowerment of the poor. It is the poor who will burst the BJP’s marketing balloon this time too, he said.
He also took on BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi over his claims that Gujarat feeds milk to the entire country, saying the state has had big dairy produce since 1950s and he deserves no credit for it.
BJP, he said, believed that one Gujarat model can be replicated across the country but it was not so and added that different states need their own models specific to their needs.
“Assam does not need Gujarat model. It needs Assam model… BJP think one ideology can run the entire country but the truth is that this country is not made of one thought or ideology but of thousands and lakhs of thoughts,” he said.
Congress, he said, would focus on the needs of 70 cr Indians, who are presently below the middle class level, and work for their development and prosperity.
Gandhi said that during his travels in Gujarat he had talked to farmers, women, adivasis, OBCs and the poor who appealed to him to look into their problems as nobody listened.
“The Gujarat model has benefited a few companies with farmers’ land taken. We do not want such models for other states,” he said.
The BJP’s ‘India Shining’ ‘hot air balloon’ burst in 2004, another did so in 2009 and the one sent up by the party this time would deflate ‘with noise three times louder’, he said.
“The NDA had launched the ‘India Shining’ campaign in 2004 which was like a hot-air balloon that went up and burst in the air and who burst it …. not the Congress, but the poor of the country did it,” he said.
“Again in 2009, another balloon went up with even the media also saying that the Congress cannot form the government, but the balloon was against burst by the people,” he said.
“Similarly, this time also a fully pumped up balloon has been sent up and this will burst with a noise three times louder,” he said.
The BJP, he alleged, believed in Hindus fighting Muslims, conflict between the poor and the rich … the Marathas against people from Uttar Pradesh, leading to riots before the general elections in Uttar Pradesh.
“Their’s is a politics of anger and they cannot see the poor and their pain and problems,” he said.
The Congress, Gandhi said, believed in the politics of love, unity and peace which was evident in Assam which witnessed violence, insurgency and no peace or development for several years.
“When Congress came to power in 2001, the state witnessed a change with love removing violence, peace returning and growth rate increasing from two per cent to 13 per cent,” Gandhi said.
“You cannot wipe out darkness with darkness, but only light can eliminate it. Assam has done it and the rest of the country should learn from this,” he added.
Criticising the BJP for stalling the passage of the women’s reservation bill, Gandhi said “We will definitely pass the bill.”
Referring to the increase of nine LPG cylinders to 12 a year, he said that women across the country had asked him to raise their number.
“I talked to Soniaji and the Prime Minister and it was increased in two minutes.”

RBI extended transitional period for full implementation of Basel III Capital Regulations in India

27032014

RBI extended transitional period for full implementation of Basel III Capital Regulations in India
upto March 31, 2019 from March 31, 2018
In view of the implementation of Basel III Capital Regulations, banks need to improve and strengthen their capital planning processes. While conducting the capital planning exercise, banks may consider the potential impact of the changing macro-economic conditions and the outcomes of periodic stress tests on the adequacy and composition of regulatory capital. A forward looking capital planning process will enable banks to appropriately assess the level of capital needed to support their business strategies over the medium-term. The capital requirements may be substantially lower during the initial years as compared to later years of full implementation of Basel III Guidelines.
During the recent times, industry-wide concerns have been expressed about the potential stresses on the asset quality and consequential impact on the performance / profitability of the banks. This may necessitate some lead time for banks to raise capital within the internationally agreed timeline for full implementation of the Basel III Capital Regulations. Accordingly, the transitional period for full implementation of Basel III Capital Regulations in India is extended upto March 31, 2019, instead of as on March 31, 2018. This will also align full implementation of Basel III in India closer to the internationally agreed date of January 1, 2019. Certain other aspects of the guidelines, more specifically, those relating to the loss absorption features of non-equity capital instruments have been reviewed in response to clarifications sought in this regard.
The revised transitional arrangements along with other modifications have been furnished in the Annex enclosed for your reference. These guidelines become applicable with immediate effect.
Warm regards,

Dr. S P Sharma
Chief Economist

Modi slams Centre, Nitish

Modi slams Centre, Nitish govt for lack of progress in Bihar<
Modi slams Centre, Nitish govt for lack of progress in Bihar
With promises on rise by all political parties  each attacking the other on ground of others inert attitude towards the common man. Modi with his firebrand move to nearly two hundred constituencies with crafted rallies pan India and his synergy on online is buzz word around the globe.
Events happening on eve of election in India brings an envious gesture by dignitaries visiting from abroad. India’s governance with rampant corruption has irked many foreign companies and their executives ,they are more interested if corruption could fade to bring  congenial atmosphere for MNC to settle in India.
Narendra Modi has blamed the Centre and the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar for lack of progress in the state and said development will be fast tracked in the entire eastern region if BJP comes to power. He also took a jibe at Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, saying despite being a woman, she has given little attention to the plight of women in the region.
“When Jharkhand was part of Bihar, you had plenty of coal but they have consumed the coal. Both the Centre and the state government have done little to improve the power scenario,” he said while addressing a public meeting in Sasaram (Bihar) on Thursday.
The BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate said while leaders talk of 21st century, Bihar remains in darkness.
“When I became the Chief Minister, Gujarat had a very bad power situation. People requested me to ensure that they get power at least during dinner time. Today there is 24-hour power supply. In villages, people can run internet, television and small factories….How will India progress without power,” he said.
While the Centre and the state government blame each other for the scenario, it is the farmer which suffers, he said, adding after the counting of votes, the country and the region will see spring of development.
He also attacked Congress for it election manifesto and accused it of lying to the people.
“In 2009, they had promised to bring down price rise in 100 days. This time again, they have made a similar promise. They are indulging in a new experiment of putting chilli powder in people’s eyes,” he said.
Attacking Rahul Gandhi over Congress’ decision to replace the party’s candidate against him in Vadodara, Modi said though he was elected through primaries, he was denied an opportunity to contest as he is a Dalit.
Hitting out at Meira Kumar who represents the Sasaram constituency, Modi said the foodgrain produced in the area is used to make alcohol and not to feed the hungry.
“Women are a worried lot despite their public representative being a woman herself. The MP has little time to listen to the problems of the people,” he said. Modi promises to carry forward Vajpayee’s policies in Kashmir.
Against the backdrop of parties in Kashmir praising the previous NDA government’s initiatives in the Valley, Narendra Modi promised to carry forward the policies of Atal Bihari Vajpayee to change the fate of Kashmir.
“The path shown by Vajpayee — humanity, democracy and Kashmiriyat — we will carry forward,” the BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate said addressing the first “Bharat Vijay Rally” at Hira Nagar near Jammu on Wednesday.
He said that if Vajpayee government had got another five years, it would have changed the face of Kashmir and problems would have ended.
His comments assume significance as mainstream political parties of the state including ruling National Conference and opposition PDP as well as moderate separatist — Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq — have, of late, been praising the Vajpayee government for its initiatives relating to Kashmir.
Modi, who paid obeisance at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine ahead of his address, neither made any reference to Article 370 this time nor replied to the challenge thrown by state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for discussing it.
This was the second rally being addressed by Modi in Jammu region. He had addressed a rally on 1st December last year during which he had stirred a controversy by demanding a dialogue on Article 370 which guarantees a special status to the state.
However, after he was challenged by state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for a discussion on Article 370, both BJP as well as Modi never raked up the issue again.
During Wednesday’s rally, retired IPS officer Farooq Khan, who has been in the forefront of anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir, joined BJP.

The bench also proposed to pass an order barring India Cements officials from getting involved with the functioning of BCCI after senior counsel Harish Salve, appearing for Cricket Association of Bihar, pointed out that many such officials are at present part of BCCI team.
Salve also raised questions on the conduct of captain of Indian Cricket Team, M S Dhoni, who is also vice president of India Cements, saying that he is guilty of corrupt practices.

SC directive  on illegal IPL betting

27032014
Learned Supreme Judiciary directing Mr Srinivasan, the head of a powerful institution like BCCI, to resign to enabling a fair enquiry into the allegations of illegal betting in IPL and suspending the involved IPL teams viz. Chennai Super King and Rajasthan Royals is an admirable and welcome move forward. Thus in setting right the prevailing ills in the sport of cricket germinating corruption and maligning the noble sport. The move shall surely restore the old glory and reverence of the game and faith of the people.

KC Agrawal thanks Election Commission framing guidelines on ‘freebies’

Subject: RE: Re: Election Commission framing guidelines on ‘freebies’, January, 2014

Dear Mr V S Sampath,

Sir, I am overwhelmed by the news headlines today ‘Vote for progress, dump corrupt: EC (TOI 28/03/2004)’. Sir, Congratulations!
My sincere thanks and admiration for what you have done to make voters wise!
Indeed a great leap forward in the making of a ‘responsible and accountable system of governance’ for the people of India.
A governance that is sensitive to human sufferings and  capable to fulfilling the ‘basic objectives’ of the Constitution.
Thanks and Regards

News Item,31, January, 2014).

 February 3, 2014
  Sir,
I will like to submit as under,
The purpose of establishing governments is to develop the nation and empower the people naturally. Elections are a process to elect worthy guardians to establish responsible governments capable of fulfilling the socio-economic requirements of the Constitution (Article 38). Article 38 is fundamental in the governance of the country (Supreme Court).
Freebies allure the voters and the most derogatory effect of it is laxity and impunity of our legislature and the entire government machinery down the line. Consequently it germinates ‘no accountability’ and ‘no responsibility’ in our entire governing system that is responsible to push the nation to the present state. Instead, it may be necessary for all Political parties and candidates to state their active developmental plans to alleviate the miseries of the people naturally, and attempts to fulfil the basic objectives of the Constitution.

[“Dole-out of freebies vitiates the electoral process and shakes the root of free and fair elections,” said a Supreme Court bench of learned Justices P. Sathasivam and Rajan Gagoi (TOI, 6 July, 2013, clipping 42A)].
Sir, please banish the practice of freebies during elections henceforth, else the country shall further dilapidate as analyzed in my book ‘India in Shambles, Only the Judiciary can save us’ (Section 4.5 III). A copy of the book is already sent to you some time ago. The book is also sent to the entire Judiciary with the sole purpose of establishing a ‘responsible and accountable system of governance’.
Sir, your decision now shall determine the future course of our country.
I hope Election commission shall be Judicious in addressing such issues prudently and set right the earlier wrongs in the interest of the nation and wellbeing of its large impoverished and famished   populace.
Thanks and Regards.
Sincerely yours
K C Agrawal

March 28,2014: Sagar Media Inc – Dr. Oscar Arias SanchezFormer President of the Republic of Costa Rica and  Nobel Peace Prize Laureate (1987) spoke on ‘At the Dawn of the Century of Reason’ at Nehru Memorial & Museum library. As an apostle of peace he raised  interesting points regarding growing menace of  nuclears arm race in the world. The five top countries to invest in this dreaded race are China, Pakistan, India, Singapore and South korea. He said this century is dedicated to Asia and in India where 1.5 millions engineers graduate and thus are seen as envious work force of the present and future.
Dr Oscar made compassionate appeal that in the 7 billion of globe population in which one billion die of over eating and two billions suffer due under nourished food ,millions die of diseases like malaria. Knowingly world instead of spending on such priorities spends on arms race. He made promising appeal to world to practice peace for the prosperity of the global citizens.
