GERMAN WARPLANES FORCE KOREAN AIR JET TO LAND IN STUTTGART

Two German military jets were scrambled to intercept a Korean Air plane with 200 passengers on board, forcing it to land in Stuttgart, Germany. The military planes were dispatched after the Korean airliner, travelling from Seoul to Zurich, failed to respond via radio Saturday night, according to Stuttgart airport officials, cited by dpa. It is not yet clear what led to the loss of radio contact. As a result, affected passengers were stuck at the airport due to a flight curfew, spending the night at the airport in Germany’s southwest.

INDIA WILL BECOME SELF-SUFFICIENT IN PULSES, OILSEEDS:

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh today exuded confidence that India will become self-sufficient in pulses and oilseeds production in the coming years. He said, the government is taking steps to boost yields through use of better quality seeds and technologies.
The country imports over 5 million tonnes of pulses and about 14.5 million tonnes of vegetable oils, comprising edible and non-edible oils every year to meet domestic demand.
Addressing the 89th foundation day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in New Delhi, Mr Singh said the government is not only focusing on increasing production but taking steps to make agriculture income-centric as part of its target to double farmers’ income by 2022.
The Minister said, the green revolution helped India in becoming self-sufficient in wheat and rice, but the country is still importing pulses and oilseeds to meet domestic demand and spending huge amount of foreign currency. The country’s pulses production increased to record 22.40 million tonnes in the 2016-17 crop year (July-June) against 16.35 million tonnes in the previous year. Oilseeds output rose by 29 per cent to 32.52 million tonnes last year.

HARINDER PAL SANDHU WINS VICTORIAN OPEN SQUASH

India’s Harinder Pal Sandhu continued his fine run by winning a second title in two weeks, beating top-seed Rex Hedrick of Australia 12-14, 11-3, 11-4, 11-7 in a 77-minute final of Victorian Open squash, in Melbourne today. The third game also followed a similar pattern as Sandhu romped home 11-4.

WHEN SHIVANGI KAPOOR DID NOT RECOGNIZE HER OWN KIDS

PI3A5569Shivangi Kapoor who has recently visited the set of Shraddha Kapoor and Siddhanth Kapoor’s Haseena Parkar almost ignored her children on set as she did not recognize them.
Apoorva Lakhia has done a commendable job in the transformation of Shraddha and Siddhanth into Haseena and Dawood which has been garnering them a lot of appreciation.
While on set both the actors were shooting together in their Haseena and Dawood’s get up when their mother came to see them. Shivangi who was standing right beside Shraddha and Siddhanth could not recognize them and asked the team to show her way to their changing room. Shivangi then called Shraddha and found the phone ringing right beside her.
Glancing at her kids in that avatar, Shivangi was quite thrilled of the transformation and the hard working the team is putting in to get the nuances of their character.
Apoorva Lakhia shares, “It was quite funny when Shivangi came on set and could not recognize Shraddha and Siddharth who were right in front of her. When she finally saw them, she was very surprised and for us, it was a great moment as the authenticity of the look and transformation was appreciated in this way.”
Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, Haseena Parkar stars Shraddha Kapoor, Siddhanth Kapoor and Ankur Bhatia. Produced by Nahid Khan with Swiss entertainment and co-produced by Sameer Antulay & Babu Tyagi the film is set to release on 18th August 2017.

Pakistan calls for DGMO talks
DGMO level talks on behest of Pakistan’s DGMO was held on 17 Jul 17.
During the talks the Pak DGMO raised the issues of targeting of Pak Army troops which resulted in the death of four Pakistani soldiers and one civilian in Athmuqam Sector of Pakistan occupied Kashmir opposite Indian Keren Sector, Kupwara District.
Indian DGMO in response highlighted that all Cease Fire Violations were initiated by Pakistan Army and the Indian Army only responded appropriately to them. Apart from these, firing by Indian troops was initiated against armed intruders when attempting to infiltrate from close proximity of Pak posts along the Line of Control (LC).
DGMO also put across emphatically that the trend of infiltration along the LC continued with active support of Pak forward posts impacting peace and tranquillity along the LC and also the internal security situation. This was evident from continued attempts of sniping and targeting of our troops undertaken through cross border actions duly supported by Pakistani Army troops.
DGMO made it implicit that Indian Army reserved the right to retaliate appropriately to any incident of violation of ceasefire but is sincere in its effort of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the LC provided there was reciprocity.

TPP AND INDIA: LESSONS FOR FUTURE GAINS BY HARSHA VARDHANA SINGH

New Brookings India Working Paper
trade1.jpg
Till 2015, the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) was seen as a game-changer in the evolving international trade regulatory regime. It was evident, as expressed by India’s Foreign Trade Policy 2015-2020, that it would not be possible for the country to accept the emerging agreement.
The future of TPP is now uncertain, with the US, the largest economy in the TPP, withdrawing from the agreement. This is of some relief to India because the TPP would have eroded India’s access to certain key international markets.
The present situation, however, gives more than just relief: it creates several important opportunities for India. The text of the TPP agreement provides a template for potentially helping India with its domestic policy reform, its regional or multilateral collaborative initiatives (e.g. for regulatory coherence), and even with some ideas to mitigate the concerns arising in trade negotiations at the regional or WTO level.
India’s concern with trade negotiations is largely with respect to tariff negotiations. In the case of TPP, the large tariff decline agreed under the negotiations would be impossible for India to accept. In this context, it is interesting that the TPP agreement also provides examples of a number of flexibilities to protect domestic industries if required, subject to specified conditions. Further, the extent of flexibility could be augmented by considering the various types of solutions agreed under TPP, ranging from soft disciplines (such as guidelines or best-effort agreement), to much more legally binding disciplines underlying the large tariff reduction by member counties.
These possibilities could be examined to provide possible models or starting point for seeking flexibilities that may lead to mutually acceptable solutions in trade negotiations for areas which otherwise would be a serious concern for India.
Like other products of the Brookings Institution India Center, this paper is intended to contribute to discussion and stimulate debate on important issues. The views are those of the author(s).

INDONESIA BANS HIZBUT GROUP

Indonesian government has banned Hizbut Tahrir, an organisation that wants to establish a global caliphate. Director General of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights,Freddy Haris, said Hizbut’s legal status had been revoked to protect national unity.
The decree signed last week by President Joko Widodo gives the government an unfettered power to ban organisations deemed against the constitution and the official state ideology known as Pancasila, which enshrines democracy and social justice.
Haris said, Hizbut’s activities were against Pancasila and the soul of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
The measures follow months of sectarian tensions in the world’s most populous Muslim nation that shook the government and undermined Indonesia’s reputation for practising a moderate form of Islam.

ENGLAND BEAT SA REACH WOMEN’S WORLD CUP FINAL

Heather Knight and Danielle Hazell toast their victory, England v South Africa, Women’s World Cup, Bristol, July 18, 2017/ICC
BRISTOL: Sarah Taylor struck a vital half-century to help England book a place in the Women´s World Cup final as they beat South Africa by two wickets at Bristol on Tuesday.
Taylor, back in an England shirt for this tournament after a year out of the game, hit 54 off 76 balls to give England control of the match before a mini collapse created a nail-biting finish.
Yet England, set 219 to win, held their nerve to complete their second highest successful run chase in World Cup history, built on the third-wicket partnership of 78 between Taylor and England captain Heather Knight.
The result bodes well for England as they go in search of their first piece of silverware in eight years, having won both previous World Cups they hosted.
Sarah Taylor and Heather Knight celebrate victory/ICC
Earlier, South Africa pair Laura Wolvaardt and Mignon du Preez recorded half-centuries as they reached 218 for six, after captain Dane van Niekerk elected to bat first with sunny blue skies overhead.
England did make an early breakthrough when Anya Shrubsole bowled Lizelle Lee for 7, having had an lbw decision against the powerful opener reversed on review the previous over.
But teenager Wolvaardt took charge and laid the foundations for South Africa´s innings, scoring her fourth half-century of the tournament, which came off 81 balls and included six fours.
Taylor produced a spectacular piece of wicketkeeping to remove Trisha Chetty, stumping her off a legside wide from Nat Sciver before Wolvaardt consolidated with Du Preez to the tune of 77 for the third wicket.
Wolvaardt eventually fell to Knight, bowled off the England skipper´s second delivery of the match, prior to new bat Marizanne Kapp being run out by Shrubsole three balls later in the same over.
Van Niekerk departed in similar fashion following quick work by Sciver in the field, and then Jenny Gunn had Chloe Tryon caught and bowled.
Du Preez, who top-scored with 76, and Sune Luus kept the score ticking over to ensure a challenging total was posed.
South Africa were inconsolable after their semi-final loss/ICC
South Africa, the lowest ranked side to reach the knockout rounds of the tournament, experienced a difficult start to the second innings as they struggled with their lines.
Ayabonga Khaka found it easier going, though, and accounted for both openers, as Du Preez caught Lauren Winfield and Khaka sent Tammy Beaumont´s bails flying.
Taylor showed her intent straight away with the bat and looked in supreme form before being run out by Van Niekerk four runs after reaching her half-century.
That dismissal saw England lose three wickets in 12 deliveries, as Knight pulled a full toss to Wolvaardt for 30 and Luus bowled Sciver round her legs on three, to bring South Africa back in the match.
Moseline Daniels then dismantled Katherine Brunt´s stumps, Fran Wilson departed ramping Kapp, and Laura Marsh was bowled by Ismail to leave the hosts needing two off three balls.
But Shrubsole smashed her first delivery for four to win it and take England through to a sell-out Lord´s final — against either defending champions Australia or India — on Sunday.

US ENFORCE NEW SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN

United States slapped new economic sanctions against Iran over its ballistic missile programme. US said Tehran’s malign activities in the Middle East undercut any positive contributions coming from the 2015 Iran nuclear accord.
The measures signalled that the administration of President Donald Trump was seeking to put more pressure on Iran while keeping in place an agreement between Tehran and six world powers to curb its nuclear programme in return for lifting international oil and financial sanctions.
The US government yesterday said it was targeting 18 entities and people for supporting what is said was illicit Iranian actors or transnational criminal activity. Those sanctioned had backed Iran’s military or Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps by developing drones and military equipment, producing and maintaining boats, and procuring electronic components.
The Treasury Department said others had orchestrated the theft of US and Western software programs sold to Iran’s government.
The State Department said in a statement that the US remains deeply concerned about Iran’s malign activities across the Middle East which undermine regional stability, security, and prosperity.
On Monday, the Trump administration said Iran was complying with the nuclear agreement but it was also in default of the spirit of the accord and Washington would look for ways to strengthen it.

FRANCE:BILL TO TOUGHEN SECURITY LAWS HAS CLEARED

France, bill to toughen security laws has cleared its first hurdle when the conservative-dominated Senate approved the legislation by a majority. Senators backed a first reading of the bill. The text will now be handed to the Lower House, the National Assembly, for debate in October.
The new laws, a campaign pledge of President Emmanuel Macron, will replace a state of emergency imposed after the November 2015 terror attacks in Paris that left 130 people dead.
Some of them will become permanent under the proposed law, a move rights groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch say is draconian.
Under the state of emergency, authorities have the power to place people under house arrest, order house searches and ban public gatherings without the prior approval of a judge. The measures were extended for a sixth time on July 6.

GERMAN FM ANNOUNCES STEPS AGAINST TURKEY

Turkish authorities named dozens of German firms as supporters of the Gulen movement in a list they sent to Germany’s federal police, according to Die Zeit weekly. The list includes industry giants Daimler and BASF.Ankara has handed Germany what police sources called a “ridiculous” list of 68 companies and individuals in Germany who have ties with Fethullah Gulen, enemy of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Die Zeit reported on Wednesday.Turkey blames Gulen and his followers for the failed military coup a year ago, in which over 250 civilians lost their lives in the violence. The movement is banned and branded as a terrorist faction by the state.
Turkey blames Gulen and his followers for the failed military coup a year ago, in which over 250 civilians lost their lives in the violence. The movement is banned and branded as a terrorist faction by the state.
The list, forwarded to Germany several weeks ago, names the car maker Daimler and chemical company BASF as backers of terrorism, but also includes a Turkish fast food restaurant and a late-night food store.
Earlier this month, Erdogan told Die Zeit that his officials sent 4,500 files on alleged Gulen sympathizers to Germany and demanded that they be extradited to Turkey.
“You need to deliver these terrorists to Turkey,” he said. “As long as you don’t, Turkey will perceive Germany as a country which is protecting terrorists.”
German officials view the list from Ankara as “absurd” and “ridiculous.” Germany’s Federal Criminal Police (BKA) has requested additional information from their Turkish colleagues, but has received no reply so far, Die Zeit reports.
Germany has been locked in a long-running diplomatic row with Turkey, with Berlin slamming the purges by Erdogan’s administration and accusing the Turkish government of using violence to silence its political opponents. Earlier on Wednesday, Germany summoned the Turkish ambassador in Berlinto protest the arrest of several human rights activists, including German citizen Peter Steudtner.
Reports DW
German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel announced on Thursday a range of steps against Turkey in response to the detention of a German human rights activist, signaling a more confrontational stance to the NATO ally after an escalation in tensions. Sigmar Gabriel said Germany would talk to EU partners about Turkey’s aspirations to join the bloc and made clear Berlin could no longer guarantee German corporate investment in Turkey. He also said he could not envisage talks on expanding the customs union to Turkey and he issued new travel advice which warned of risks in Turkey for Germans. “We need to be clearer than we have been until now so those responsible in Ankara understand that such policies are not without consequences,”Gabriel told reporters. He said the new steps had been agreed with Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Germany raised the possibility on Wednesday of suspending European Union aid payments to Turkey after summoning Ankara’s ambassador to Berlin to protest over the arrest of six human rights activists including a German citizen. The moves mark a further escalation of tensions between NATO allies Germany and Turkey.“Unfortunately we have constant cause to talk to Turkey about civil and press freedoms,”government spokesman Steffen Seibert said. “We think it is important to review aid in light of the latest developments.” Seibert was referring to a package of assistance totaling €3 billion that the EU has promised to Turkey to help stem flows of migrants, mostly from conflict zones in the Middle East, into Europe

LOK SABHA ADJOURNED FOR THE DAY

Lok Sabha was today adjourned for the day following Opposition uproar over the issue of farmers’ plight. As soon as the House met for the day, the Opposition led by Congress and Left raised the issue of the agrarian crisis in the country and trooped into the well shouting slogans.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar questioned the opposition and said only two Congress members were present yesterday when discussion on the issue was taking place in the Lok Sabha.
The Congress and Left members also raised the issue of alleged bribe taken by a BJP leader in Kerala to ensure Medical Council of India’s recognition for a private medical college in the state and demanded probe into it. When the House met at noon following two adjournments, the situation was no different as Opposition members continued the sloganeering. Amidst the din, the Speaker adjourned the House for the day.
Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh asked the government to look into the demands being raised by farmers across the country seeking Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for their produce. Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, Mr Singh said the BJP government had assured farmers of providing MSP in its election manifesto.

This comes roughly a year after the 2016 Reliance AGM, where Ambani announced the public launch of the Reliance Jio telecom network. The Jio Phone supports 22 Indian languages. The phone was launched on stage by Mukesh Ambani’s children, Isha and Aakash Ambani. His other son, Ananth was in the audience, seated next to his grandmother Kokilaben.
Kokilaben broke down briefly when Mukesh Ambani dedicated the achievements of the company to its founder, Dhirubhai Ambani. Several references to PM Narendra Modi during the AGM.
Ambani said Jio phone will be the “most intelligent, affordable phone” in
the world — a 4G LTE phone supporting all 24 Indian languages. Ambani says Jio committed to ending “digital disempowerment and unfairness” by providing affordable data and devices.
India has overtaken US and China in mobile data usage, says Mukesh Ambani on his telecom venture Jio. In just 6 months of Jio launch, data consumption in India went to 120 cr GB a month, from 20 cr GB. Jio has 125 million customers today, added 7 customers per second every single day.

Bengaluru, 20th July 2017:  On day six of the William Jones Cup, the Indian men’s basketball team lost 87-117 against Republic of China White, which is the Chinese Taipei National Team B.

The opposition dominated the first quarter and opened up a huge lead of 15 points. In the second quarter, the Indian men rediscovered their shooting form of the last few games and scored 31 points, but were unable to stop the Chinese offensive juggernaut.

The Indian team had four players scoring in double figures, led by Amjyot Singh Gill with 22 points. Muin Bek Hafeez impressed again, finishing with 13 points and hitting 3 of 5 shots from beyond the arc. Jeevanantham Pandi (10 points) and Anil Kumar (12 points) provided the offensive spark off the bench. Collectively, the team shot an impressive 60% from two-point range.

Eventually, the Indian men were outdone by the offensive production of the Chinese team, who had six players finish the game scoring in double figures. The Chinese Taipei men also racked up 18 steals which allowed them some easy points.

While the Indian team remains winless, these matches are vital for the young side, as the players have gained valuable minutes and will be looking to maintain this offensive form when they compete in the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon next month.

But for now, they will be focused on strengthening their defense when they take on Canada (represented by 3D Global Sports) on 21st July at 1100 hrs CST (0830 IST).

Republic of China White (Kyle Baron 18 pts; Yi-Jin Su 16 pts; Ying-Chun Chen 15 pts) bt India (Amjyot Singh Gill 22 pts; Muin Bek Hafeez 13 pts; Anil Kumar Gowda 12 pts) 117-87 [30-15, 36-31, 24-21, 27-20]

About the William Jones Cup

The William Jones Cup is a basketball tournament that has been held annually in Taipei since 1977. One team represents each country, and that team could be the national team, a professional club, or a college team. MODI’S FALSE PROMISES ON MINIMUM SUPPORT PRICE EXPOSED

Modi’s false promises on Minimum Support Price exposed
Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh again misled the country by making a completely false statement by claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had never promised to offer a minimum support price to farmers but had instead promised to give a profit of 50% profit to farmers on the production cost. Not only is this a completely false statement but the minister also did not clarify how the farmers can gain a profit of 50% without having an MSP in place.

DEAR SAGAR MEDIA INC, 7000 TREES WERE CUT DOWN TO BUILD A RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX IN THE FARIDABAD ARAVALLIS.

Change.org

7000 trees were cut down in the Aravallis to build a residential complex. Ask Bharti Land to restore these trees and the Government to keep Real-Estate out of the Aravallis.

Dear Sagar Media Inc,
7000 trees were cut down to build a residential complex in the Faridabad Aravallis.
They were cut down even though this land is part of a Natural Conservation Zone where residential construction is not permitted.
Sagar Media Inc, if we don’t stop this construction, it will set a dangerous precedent! The entire Haryana Aravallis are at stake. Sign my petition.
The trees were cut down by Bharti Land (a sister company of Bharti Airtel) and permission was given by the Haryana Government.
Ironically, Bharti Land is planning to call this complex “Delhi Ridge” – named after the very forest they are destroying.
Sign my petition and show Bharti Land and the Haryana Government that we want actual forests, not concrete jungles.
Bharti Land is a respected company, they have crores of Indian customers. If we unite, we can show them that their customers will not tolerate their actions.
Sign my petition and ask Bharti Land to restore the forest and the Haryana Government to keep real estate out of the Aravallis.
Trees and forest land are very important to every city. These Aravalli lands act as the ground water recharge catchment for this region and they are our last hope to clean Delhi’s polluted air.
Without these trees, we will face more pollution, more water shortages, less wildlife habitat and lose our precious biodiversity. Sign my petition to protect the trees that let us live.
Thank you for your support,
Vivek Kamboj

#2: FIBA ASIA WOMEN’S CUP 2017 –

#2: FIBA Asia Women’s Cup 2017 – India beat Uzbekistan; Australia and Japan open with victories
Bengaluru, 23rd July 2017: The FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2017 tipped off this morning at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru.

Division A

Australia down Korea

The first Division A game was a clash between powerhouse Australia and Korea. Playing for the first time in the FIBA Asia zone, Australia made an emphatic statement with a 78-54 win.

Ranked number 4 in the world, Australia got off to a slow start, allowing Korea to gain a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. But from the second period onwards, Australia stifled the Koreans, forcing them to take tough contested shots. Korea managed only 3 points in the second quarter compared to Australia’s 20.

With a 33-18 lead to begin the second half, Australia cruised the rest of the way, relying on the scoring of forwards Kelsey Michelle Griffin (15 points) and Allanna Smith (13 points). Point guard Lauren Stacey Mansfield had 6 points and 5 assists.

Australia (Kelsey Michelle Griffin 15, Alanna Smith 13, Belinda Snell 11) bt Korea (Sungyoung Sim 11, Jisu Park 10, Hana Park 7) 78-54 [13-15, 20-3, 24-18, 21-18]

Japan rout Philippines

The Philippines were given a tough introduction to Division A, as they were defeated by Japan 106 – 55. The Japanese women got off to an electric start in the first quarter, opening up a 16-point lead. The lead only continued to grow as the game wore on, as the Japanese women continued to rotate the ball well, and maintain a high tempo on transition.

Evelyn Mawuli (21 points) led the scoring for Japan, and five other players also finished with scoring in double figures. Star point guard Asami Yoshida racked up five assists in the first five minutes of the game, and could afford to spend the rest of the game on the bench as the Japanese lead was never threatened.
Japan (Evelyn Mawuli 21 pts; Miyuki Kawamura 14 pts; Sakura Akaho 12 pts) bt Philippines (Gemma Miranda 17 pts; Allana May Lim 9 pts; Janine Pontejos 8 pts) 106-55 [25-11, 31-20, 31-8, 19-16]

Chinese Taipei edge past PRK

Chinese Taipei won their first game of the tournament 77 – 76 against DPR of Korea, in a thrilling finish. The game was tied at 60 going into the fourth quarter, and tied at 76 in the final minutes of the game. With seconds left on the clock, Chinese Taipei were awarded free throws for a foul committed by DPR of Korea, and managed to convert one of them.

The women from Chinese Taipei had to overcome a spirited performance from Suk Yong Ro, who had 36 points, shooting at a surreal 82%. DPR of Korea fielded a small team that played the game with a lot of intensity and at a very high tempo, forcing Chinese Taipei to play catch-up through most of the game. There were seven lead changes and five ties over the course of the game.

Chinese Taipei was led by centre Hsi-Le Bao who had a double-double, racking up 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Chinese Taipei (Hsi-Le Bao 17 pts, 10 rebs; Yu-Hao Lan 14 pts; Ping-Jen Huang 11 pts) bt DPR of Korea (Suk Yong Ro 36 pts; Hyang Ok Kim 23 pts) 77-76 [20-28, 20-16, 20-16, 17-16]

China defeat New Zealand

In their first match in the expanded FIBA Asia zone, New Zealand was blown out by team China. China’s size bothered New Zealand throughout the game. Starting at centre for China was 6-foot-7-inch Yueru Li, who was a towering presence in the paint.

China played excellent defense on New Zealand, rotating well and closing in on the NZ shooters. The paint was practically shut down by Yueru Li and backup centre Hongpin Huang. On the offensive end, China was patient, using the shot clock and finding the open shot.

Despite the absence of their first-choice centre Sun Mengran, China led from start to finish and closed out on a 77-48 win. Meng Li top scored for China with a game-high 15 points. Jillian Harmon had 14 points for New Zealand in the loss.

China (Meng Li 15, Yi Shen 14, Shuang Zhao 14) bt New Zealand (Jillian Harmon 14, Micaela Cocks 9, Antonia Edmondson 8) 77-48 [17-10, 22-14, 21-16, 17-8]

Division B

India defeat Uzbekistan

India began their quest for promotion to Division A with a flourish, beating Uzbekistan 92 – 76. The Indian women were hugely productive offensively, led by Anitha Paul Durai with 28 points. She was money from three-point land, hitting six of seven shots, and played with her heart on her sleeve, hustling on every possession.

Coach Visic rotated his team throughout the game, and there were bright performances all round: Jeena Skaria chipped in with 12 points and Shireen Limaye had 10 rebounds. Last minute call up Grima Merlin was very effective off the bench with 17 points, many of which were scored in transition.

India (Anitha Paul Durai 28 pts; Grima Merlin 17 pts; Jeena Skaria 12 pts) bt Uzbekistan (Elvira Salavatova 15 pts; Elena Khusnitdinova 14 pts; Natalya Koneva 13 pts) 92 – 76 (19 – 9, 24 – 21, 26 – 23, 23 – 23)

Singapore outclass Fiji

The other Division B games took place in Koramangala Indoor Stadium, starting with the game between Singapore and first time participants Fiji. Singapore outmatched Fiji in all departments, ending with a 103-38 win. Jayne Sarah top scored for Singapore with 21 points.

Singapore (Jayne Sarah En Min Tan 21, Jacqueline Jia Jia Chu 17, Cheryl Poon 17) bt Fiji (Bitila Sigani Tawake 8, Tiyana Anne Kainamou 7) 103-38 (35-9, 25-12, 18-9, 25-8)

Lebanon lose to Kazakhstan

Dear All,

IMF retains India's growth projections at 7.2% for 2017

International monetary fund (IMF) in its latest update on World Economic Outlook (WEO) has anticipated global growth forecast to pick up in 2017 and 2018 .The global growth for 2016 is estimated at 3.2 % as of now, slightly stronger than the April 2017 forecast, mainly reflecting much higher growth in Iran and stronger activity in India following national accounts revisions. Economic activity in both advanced economies and emerging and developing economies has been forecasted to accelerate in 2017, to 2 % and 4.6 % respectively, with global growth projected to be 3.5 %, unchanged from the April forecast.

For advanced economies, the growth forecast for 2018 is 1.9 % which is 0.1 percentage point below the April 2017 WEO, and 4.8 % for emerging and developing economies. The 2018 global growth forecast is unchanged at 3.6 %. The revisions reflect primarily the macroeconomic implications of changes in policy assumptions for the world’s two largest economies, the United States and China.

Advanced economies

Ø The growth forecast in the United States has been revised down from 2.3 % to 2.1 % in 2017 and from 2.5 % to 2.1 % for the year 2018.

Ø The growth forecast has also been revised down for the United Kingdom for 2017 on weaker-than-expected activity in the first quarter.

Ø Growth projections for 2017 have been revised up for many euro area countries, including France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Ø The growth forecast for 2017 was also revised up for Canada, where buoyant domestic demand boosted first-quarter growth to 3.7 % and marginally for Japan, where private consumption, investment, and exports supported first-quarter growth.

Emerging and developing economies

Ø Emerging and developing economies are anticipated to see a persistent pickup in activity, with growth rising from 4.3 % in 2016 to 4.6 % in 2017 and 4.8 % in 2018.

Ø China’s growth is expected to remain at 6.7 % in 2017, the same level as in 2016, and to decline only modestly in 2018 to 6.4%.

Ø Growth in India is forecast to pick up further in 2017 and 2018, in line with the April 2017 forecast. While activity slowed following the currency exchange initiative, growth for 2016, at 7.1%, was higher than anticipated due to strong government spending and data revisions that show stronger momentum in the first part of the year.

Ø In Emerging and Developing Europe, growth is projected to pick up in 2017, primarily driven by a higher growth forecast for Turkey, where exports recovered strongly in the last quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2017 following four quarters of moderate contraction, and external demand is projected to be stronger with improved prospects for euro area trading partners. The Russian economy is projected to recover gradually in 2017 and 2018, in line with the April forecast.

Ø After contracting in 2016, economic activity in Latin America is projected to recover gradually in 2017–18 as a few countries including Argentina and Brazil exit their recessions.

Ø Growth in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan region is projected to slow considerably in 2017, reflecting primarily a slowdown in activity in oil exporters, before recovering in 2018.

Ø In Sub-Saharan Africa, the outlook remains challenging. Growth is projected to rise in 2017 and 2018, but will barely return to positive territory in per capita terms this year for the region as a whole and would remain negative for about a third of the countries in the region.

ISRAEL PM NETANYAHU: MEND WAYS TO CLOSE DOWN AL-JAZEERA IN COUNTRY

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said, he would look for ways to close down the presence of satellite news station Al-Jazeera in the country. He accused the Qatar-based channel of inciting violence during the current standoff between Israel and Palestine.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the old city of Jerusalem has seen unprecedented tensions in the last few days over Israel’s decision to install metal detectors and other heightened security measures at the compound.
Earlier, the four Arab States led by Saudi Arabia had decided to shutter the presence of Al Jazeera from their countries accusing it of supporting the terror groups like Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qaeda.
In the ongoing Gulf crisis, one of the major demands by the four Arab States from Qatar is to close down the Al Jazeera Channel because of its alleged affiliations to terrorist groups.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he is concerned about the risk of violence escalating in the Old City of Jerusalem, where recent clashes between Israelis and Palestinians have been the bloodiest in years.
Guterres said in a statement that he is particularly concerned about the potential risk of escalating violence and urges all political, religious and community leaders to refrain from provocative action and rhetoric, and call on Israel to demonstrate restraint

Official sources said, the case has been registered under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act taking cognisance of a CBI FIR in this regard.
Earlier this month, the CBI had registered a criminal FIR and conducted multiple searches against the former Bihar chief minister and others.
The ED will investigate the alleged proceeds of crime generated by the accused, purportedly through shell companies.
The case dates back to the time when Lalu Prasad was the Railway Minister in the UPA rule.
In the CBI FIR it has been alleged that Lalu Prasad handed over the maintenance of two IRCTC hotels to a company after receiving a bribe in the form of prime land in Patna through a ‘benami’ company.

MOSUL IN GRIP OF HUMANITARIAN CALAMITY

Mosul – With the battle for West Mosul all but over last week, evidence of a humanitarian calamity that is now just beginning to unravel paints the picture of a crisis that may go well beyond previous expectations, reports IOM Iraq’s Hala Jaber.
Crossing one of the floating bridges over the Tigris River that splits Mosul into twin eastern and western sectors, stark differences emerge quickly as changes in scenery appear unexpectedly.
In this tale of two cities, all indications show East Mosul to be recovering at a rapid pace, with much of its life returning to normal and a significant portion of services restored; West Mosul’s rise from the ashes is expected to take much longer.
From the hustle and bustle of life in the eastern sector, a team from IOM, the UN Migration Agency, crossed the bridge into the eerie, even deadly quiet of West Mosul, in stark contrast to the atmosphere of its twin on the other side of the Tigris, where life is recovering swiftly.
Here, life appears to have stopped.
Rows of houses and neighbourhoods lie in total ruins as far as the eye can see. The carcasses of cars, reduced to smithereens and still parked in front of the shells of what used to be homes, are testament to the ferocious fighting that took place in this part of the city.
Roads that once were jammed with vehicles are deserted and mostly disfigured by mammoth craters. Pavements where children used to play now lie under heaps of rubble. Even stray cats and dogs, which recently used to scurry about these streets and neighbourhoods, have mostly left.
The battle to retake Mosul from ISIL came at a high cost. Entire neighbourhoods of a city tracing its history back to 401 BC now lie in ruin. The Old City is almost a ghost town.
According to the UN, of the 54 residential districts in West Mosul, 15 are “flattened,” with nearly 32,000 houses destroyed in those areas. A further 23 districts are moderately damaged, with nearly half their buildings destroyed. In the 16 neighbourhoods considered “lightly” damaged, there are a combined 16,000 homes destroyed.
In the Old City alone, over 5,500 buildings have been damaged, according to a satellite imagery assessment undertaken by Habitat. Some 490 homes were destroyed in the final weeks of the offensive.
All five bridges straddling the Tigris River have been mangled; many schools and utility grids are in total ruins. Roads and highways struck by heavy shelling are strewn with gigantic craters. Mosul’s airport has been wrecked, as has the city’s historic railway and at least one university.
Officials estimate that nearly 80 per cent of Mosul’s Medical City is now a burnt shell. The Medical City was the largest health facility in the Ninewa governorate, housing several hospitals, a nearby medical school, laboratories and other medical facilities. Explosive devices still litter its floors. Several cars containing undetonated bombs detected by an IOM colleague remain parked inside.
The UN Humanitarian Response Plan for Iraq, issued in February, warned: “The operation in Mosul has the potential to be the single largest humanitarian operation in the world in 2017,” and requested USD 985 million for the year, including the estimated costs of supporting civilians impacted by fighting in Mosul.
By early July, less than half of that amount – USD 440 million – had been received.
IOM continues to provide humanitarian assistance to the tens of thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in its constructed emergency sites at Qayara Air Strip and Haji Ali, as well as to families that remain in host communities outside the camps.
However, with only 33 per cent of IOM’s USD 28.83 million appeal for the Mosul Crisis received – and 34 per cent of USD 47.46 million 2017 appeal for other areas of Iraq – the funding gap may significantly impact future humanitarian operations.
In response to the Mosul crisis, IOM has provided 287,977 medical consultations and treatments since June 2016, and provided life-saving medical devices to health centres serving large numbers of IDPs. Mobile Medical Teams continue to deliver immediate health services in the areas of greatest need.
IOM has also provided psychological services to 49,100 people, and distributed 61,600 non-food item kits to IDPs. The Organization has distributed a further 38,400 kerosene assistance kits and 9,000 boxes of clothes during the past 13 months as well.
IOM is already contributing to the rehabilitation of infrastructure in three retaken towns affected by the Mosul crisis, including: repairs to water networks, agricultural irrigation canals, a health-care centre, and electricity networks as well as school rehabilitation. It is also working to expand its work to additional retaken areas as and when the security situation allows.
To improve shelter conditions, 17,500 tents and 31 rub halls were installed by IOM and 14,415 emergency shelter kits were distributed. Shelter damage assessments have been conducted in villages south of Mosul, as far as Hamam al-Alil, and planned shelter interventions include critical shelter upgrades and rehabilitation of damaged homes.
Nonetheless, tens of thousands of families have been left without homes. Since the beginning of the Mosul operations in October 2016, the cumulative number of IDPs whose locations of displacement and/or return have been identified by IOM’s Emergency Tracking for Mosul Operations (Displacement Tracking Matrix, or DTM) reached 178,695 families, corresponding to 1,072,170 individuals.
Of these IDPs, more than 846,252 individuals (141,042 families) are still displaced. Another 225,918 IDPs have now returned, with an estimated 80 per cent going back to their districts of origin in East Mosul.
Of all the IDPs currently displaced by the Mosul operations, over 360,100 (or 42 per cent) live in camps and emergency sites around Mosul. IOM’s emergency sites host nearly 22 per cent of these individuals.
IOM Iraq Chief of Mission Thomas Lothar Weiss said, “The scale of destruction in West Mosul is enormous and the challenge of reconstruction is no small feat in ensuring the return of hundreds of thousands of displaced Iraqis to their communities and livelihoods. IOM has been on the ground since the start, providing humanitarian assistance, shelter and livelihood support, and is committed to continue with the help of the necessary funding from its donor partners.”
The DTM is collaborating closely with local authorities to extend the tracking system in West Mosul. DTM will focus particularly on setting up a returnee tracking system where levels of displacement affecting West Mosul are greater compared with those on the eastern bank of the Tigris.
The DTM will soon release its report, Mosul Military Operations: Population Movement Analysis (October 2016 to June 2017). The report provides a chronological examination of displacement and return movements that took place during the military operations which started on 17 October 2016.
IOM’s DTM actively monitors displacement across Iraq.
DTM products and information about DTM methodology can be found on the DTM portal: iraqdtm.iom.int

NITISH KUMAR SWORN-IN AS CHIEF MINISTER OF BIHAR FOR 6TH TIME

23kovind1
Janta Party formed in 1977 after the promulgation of emergency in 1975.
The Janata Party JP was an amalgam of Indian political parties opposed to the State of Emergency that was imposed between 1975 and 1977 by the Government of India under the Prime Ministership of Indira Gandhi and her party, the Indian National Congress (R). In the general election held after the end of the state of emergency in 1977, the Janata party defeated Congress (R) to form the first non-Congress government in the Republic of India
Raj Narain, a socialist leader, had filed a legal writ alleging electoral malpractice against Indira Gandhi in 1971. On 12 June 1975, Allahabad High Court found her guilty of using corrupt electoral practices in her 1971 election victory over Narain in the Rae Bareli constituency. She was barred from contesting any election for the next six years. Economic problems, corruption and the conviction of Gandhi led to widespread protests against the Congress (R) government, which responded by imposing a State of Emergency. The rationale was that of preserving national security. However, the government introduced press censorship, postponed elections and banned strikes and rallies. Opposition leaders such as Jayaprakash Narayan, Satyendra Narayan Sinha, Jivatram Kripalani, Biju Patnaik and Morarji Desai were imprisoned, along with thousands of other political activists. When the State of Emergency was lifted and new elections called in 1977, opposition political parties such as the Congress (O), Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Bharatiya Lok Dal as well as defectors from the Congress (R) joined to form the Janata party, which won a sweeping majority in the Indian Parliament. Narain defeated Gandhi at Rae Bareli in those elections. This Janta Party later split into two mainly Janta Dal and BJP but Janta party after 1980 had little or no impact on Indian politics. Thereafter Janta dal has various offshoots BJD, JD secular, RJD, SP, and many other splinter groups. The regional leaders found their political outfits and the five states has its presence in Bihar JD U, a partner of BJP changed to its RJD has recently gone back to is older allies of  BJP.  BJP with its neo-leadership now has majority in national assembly  with  three and half decades of existence and backing of its chief frontal organisation the members are nearly 2Cr across India.  BJP state  and central  rule leadership is building brick by brick across India.  PM Modi has gained mass appeal and clinched International acclaim with his spirited ideas and actions which need mass support and action.
PM Modi today  dedicated Dr Kalam Memorial at Rameswaram this morning in presence of Tamil Nadu Governor Vidyasagar Rao, chief minister Edapadi K Palaniswamy, Central and State Ministers and other dignitaries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said making of a developed India in all fronts by 2022, coinciding with 75th year of Independence, would be the true tribute to be paid to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
Prime Minister in a public rally appealed that all 125 crore Indians should contribute to realise the dream of a developed India. In the rally, Mr Modi inaugurated a slew welfare measures and development schemes.
He distributed sanction letters to fishermen for getting Long Liner Trawlers. For the scheme under the Blue Revolution initiative, the Centre has sanctioned 200 crore rupees towards distributing 300 trawlers in the first phase, and 86 crore rupees has been allocated by the state as its share.
Prime Minister Modi said the scheme would help Indian fishermen to go deep into the sea and enhance their economic activities besides avoiding crossing international maritime borders that often leads to detention.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also flagged off a weekly train between the pilgrim centres of Rameswaram and Ayodhya. He dedicated to the nation a 9.5 kilometers long stretch of National Highways linking the Dhanuskodi island with the mainland. Dhanuskodi remained virtually cut off since the devastating cyclone 53 years ago.
In his address, Mr Modi said a progressive India is possible only with the states progressing. He added that the Centre is working closely with all state governments including the Tamil Nadu administration.
He said Eighteen Thousand Crore rupees has been spent on making lakhs of youth of the nation skilled in the past three years. He expressed hope that the ambitious Sagar Mala scheme would help generate plenty of jobs including those living in coastal areas.
Mr Modi asked the Tamil Nadu Government to send proposals for housing schemes for the needy and promised that the Centre would consider them favourably. He said an estimated 8 lakh families are in need of housing and added that the Government is spearheading initiatives to meet the need
JD(U) President Nitish Kumar was today sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the sixth time and BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi was sworn-in as the Deputy Chief Minister. Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi administered him the oath of office and secrecy at Raj Bhavan in Patna.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Nitish Kumar on taking over as Bihar Chief Minister. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, he is looking forward to work together for Bihar’s progress and prosperity.
A special session of the Bihar Assembly has been convened tomorrow for Mr Nitish Kumar to prove his majority on the floor of the House. The decision was taken in the state cabinet chaired by Mr Kumar.
Nitish Kumar had resigned as the Chief Minister last evening citing irreconcilable differences with RJD on corruption charges against Lalu Prasad’s son and former Deputy CM Tejaswi Prasad Yadav.
Later, the JDU President joined hands with the BJP to form a new government in the state. He was elected the leader of the JD(U)-NDA alliance at a meeting at his residence. After the meeting, Mr Kumar and Mr Sushil Modi drove to the Raj Bhawan to stake claim to form the new government.
With the support of 132 MLAs, NDA enjoys a comfortable majority in 243-member State Assembly where 122 MLAs are requited to prove majority.
Meanwhile, Tejaswi Yadav met the Governor early this morning to register protest over Nitish Kumar being invited to form the government ahead of the RJD, which is the single largest party in the state.
RJD has also convened a meeting of legislators this evening to chalk out a strategy in view of the political scenario in the state. State Party President Ramchandra Purve said, under the leadership of Tejaswi Prasad Yadav, the party will discuss various issues.
Congress has also convened a meeting of its legislators. The meeting will be chaired by senior party leader CP Joshi.
RJD Chief Lalu Prasad said, Nitish Kumar joined hands with BJP to ensure raids by CBI and Enforcement Directorate on RJD leaders.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has said, Nitish Kumar has betrayed the people of Bihar by joining hands with the BJP.

A BORDER STANDOFF BETWEEN CHINESE AND INDIAN TROOPS

Chinese and Indian soldiers stand guard at the Nathu La border crossing in India’s northeastern Sikkim state, near the disputed Doklam territory. Photo: AFP
A border standoff between Chinese and Indian troops on a remote Himalayan plateau has heightened long-standing tensions while ensnaring a tiny kingdom, Bhutan, between the two nuclear-armed powers.
The row has festered for more than a month as India and China refuse to back down in the distant but strategically key territory, reflecting the historic mistrust between the Asian giants.
The area is disputed between China and Bhutan but India’s decision to jump into the fray reflects its concerns about Beijing’s growing military might and ambitions in the region, analysts say.
The border trouble began in mid-June when Chinese soldiers started to extend a road through the Doklam territory — known as “Donglang” in Chinese.
India, a close ally of Bhutan, then deployed troops to stop the construction project, prompting Beijing to accuse India of trespassing on Chinese soil.
China, which warned this week that it would step up its deployment, insists that India must withdraw its troops before any proper negotiation takes place. India says said both sides should withdraw their forces.
“The solution to this issue is simple, which is that the Indian troops back out honestly,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said this week.
While the deadlock may be broached during Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s visit to Beijing on Thursday, there are no signs that either side is ready to back down.
“It’s easier to shake a mountain than to shake the People’s Liberation Army (PLA),” Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Wu Qian boasted at a press conference Monday.
Sarath Chand, India’s vice army chief, said on Tuesday: “China is expanding its influence across the Himalayas into our neighbourhood despite being an economy five times the size (of India), with such a large standing army… it is bound to be a threat for us in the years ahead.”
Mistrust is hundreds of years old and the pair fought a brief war in 1962 in India’s border state of Arunachal Pradesh.
“India views China’s road-building as a threat because (the Chinese) have gone against the status quo of behaviour in a disputed territory,” Shen Dingli, vice dean of Fudan University’s Institute of International Studies, told AFP.
The road was being built close to the “Chicken’s Neck,” a narrow, essential strip of land connecting India’s northeastern provinces with the rest of the country.
But Beijing maintains that “Doklam has been part of China since ancient times,” countering that Indian troops triggered the standoff by crossing a boundary established in an 1890 agreement with Britain.
Zhao Xiaozhuo, a senior Chinese colonel and an analyst at a PLA think tank, said it was “ridiculous” for India to view the road construction as a threat.
“India views infrastructure in the border areas as only for military use with little consideration for their valuable role in economic development,” Zhao wrote in the state-run China Daily.
Bhutan has taken a backseat as India and China scuffle.
Jayadeva Ranade, head of the Delhi-based Centre for China Analysis and Strategy, said China is trying to establish a “pro-Beijing lobby” inside Bhutan.
“But Bhutan has limitations on what it can do directly. It has protested to China, issued notes, but more than that, what can they really do but sit and watch?”
Chinese President Xi Jinping nor Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi can back down without facing a “nationalist backlash” back home, said Huang Jing, a Sino-Indian relations expert at the National University of Singapore.
Xi in particular must exude strength as he consolidates power before a crucial Communist Party congress later this year.
“This situation is very dangerous. I don’t think China has much choice if the Indian troops stay where they are — Xi will have to demonstrate to Chinese people whether he means what he says,” Huang told AFP.
India fears that China’s “String of Pearls” military and commercial network in the Indian Ocean increasingly undermines its own geopolitical status.
And it has voiced concern about another Chinese project: The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which will give Beijing access to the Arabian Sea but passes through the hotly disputed Kashmir region.
The project is part of a massive Chinese global trade infrastructure programme dubbed One Belt, One Road, which India has snubbed.
The standoff is a very public sign of India’s willingness to push back.
“As this face-off continues, the one who’s actually losing ground are the Chinese because they have styled themselves so far as a major power whom no one can challenge,” Ranade said.
“So the fact that India has stood up to them is a message to all other countries in the region.

WHITE PAPER ON THE STATE OF HEALTH OF DELHI

  • Dengue deaths increased by almost seven times from 2014 (74) to 2015 (486).
  • From 2014 to 2016, Delhi saw an average of 5,89,683 cases of diarrhoea annually. As many as 41% of deaths due to diarrhoea were of children 4 years of age or younger.
  • 22% of the total diarrhoea cases were in Rural Narela Zone alone.
  • There were 7,985 institutional deaths due to tuberculosis in 2014 and 2015.
  • In 2016-17, the average Delhi household spent an estimated Rs. 1,07,793 as annual expenses on health.
  • Only 15% of citizens are estimated to have health insurance.
26th July, Delhi: Cases of diarrhoea and hypertension spiked in Delhi from 2015 to 2016, a white paper on the state of health of Delhi published by NGO Praja Foundation revealed. Diarrhoea cases increased from 5,64,416 in 2015 to 6,22,480 in 2016, and the city registered an average of 5,89,683 cases from 2014 to 2016. Hypertension cases increased from 3,22,510 in 2015 to 3,61,443 in 2016.
Even as the capital has seen an extremely high number of diarrhoea cases in the past three years, citizens lodged a large number of complaints about polluted water in 2016, indicating that people had raised concerns about the issue to the authorities. Among various civic issues, the maximum number (2,27,444) of civic complaints in 2016 by far were on water supply. These constituted 50% of the total complaints in that year.
This data was procured by Praja Foundation under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005.
Speaking about these findings, Milind Mhaske, Project Director of Praja Foundation, said, “While apathy on the part of citizens is often a factor which comes in the way of ensuring accountable governance, this was clearly not the case when it came to diarrhoea in Delhi. These statistics indicate that people did raise a red flag over polluted water, but the authorities paid little heed.”
Zone-wise data collected by the organisation revealed that Rohini Zone of North Delhi Municipal Corporation had the highest number of (8,599) cases for Dengue in the last three years (26% of the total). With respect to tuberculosis also, Rohini Zone saw the highest number (74,477) of cases for Tuberculosis in the last three years. The cases in Rohini Zone alone constituted 33% of the total cases of tuberculosis in that year. Rural Narela zone had the highest number of (3,84,401) cases for Diarrhoea in the last three years. The cases in Rural Narela constituted 22 % of the total diarrhoea cases in Delhi.
The white paper also included estimated data on the household expenditure incurred on health by Delhi citizens. This data was collected through a survey commissioned by Praja to research organisation Hansa Research. Shockingly, the average Delhi household spent an estimated amount of Rs. 1,07,793 on healthcare in 2016-17. Further, only 15% of citizens were estimated to have health insurance.
“This means that while on one hand, authorities are not taking enough preventable measures to check the spread of diseases, citizens are spending humungous amounts of money on their healthcare needs. Further, as highlighted by the data, health risks disproportionately affect poorer households,” Anjali Srivastava, Assistant Manager at Praja Foundation, said.
Even as the city continues to see very high cases of major diseases, the responses of elected representatives to several of these diseases appears to be inadequate. For instance, medical relief and public health committee councillors did not raise even a single issue on tuberculosis from April 2015 to December 2016. Similarly, MLAs also did not raise even a single issue on tuberculosis from the time of their election on 24th February, 2015 to 15th November, 2016.
“In order for concrete steps to be taken to improve the state of public health, it is absolutely essential that there should be a proper data management system on various diseases. There is no way that the authorities in charge of running Delhi can confront the various health challenges confronting the city unless they have a clear idea about their magnitude,” Milind Mhaske said.

AMAZON HIGH SALES AND SPENDING, PROFIT DIPS

14469701_10210250034548874_8488814053221049503_n
US MNC is dreaded organisation which can consume markets of best of the national companies in trading  developing nation which more or less depends more on trading specially on the current economic scenarios where change  is an bewildering experience the US MNC Amazon rules supreme with abundant cash at its disposal and financing the entire couriers enterprises . With massive battery of people working on wheels across the nations Amazon can rate its yearly revenue equivalent to that of India plan outlay.
Amazon Founded in July 1994, Their Mission:
Our vision is to be Earth’s most customer centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online.Online shopping from the earth’s biggest selection of books, magazines, music, DVDs, videos, electronics, computers, software, apparel & accessories, shoes, jewelry, tools & hardware, housewares, furniture, sporting goods, beauty & personal care, gourmet food & just about anything else.
Amazon.com Inc on Thursday reported a jump in retail sales along with a profit slump, as its rapid, costly expansion into new shopping categories and countries showed no sign of slowing.
The world’s largest online retailer posted second-quarter revenue of $38 billion, up 25 percent from a year earlier. The breakneck growth stood in contrast to the fate of many brick-and-mortar rivals, who have struggled to find their footing as more people shop online.
Yet Seattle-based Amazon posted a 77 percent drop in quarterly income, and even said it could lose up to $400 million in operating profit during the current quarter. Beyond reflecting retail’s notoriously thin margins, the forecast signaled Amazon would invest heavily to maintain its dominance.
Shares – up nearly 40 percent this year – fell 3.2 percent to $1,012.68 in after-hours trading. The company had earned 40 cents per share instead of $1.42 as analysts had expected, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
“Q3 is generally a high investment period,” Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said on a call with reporters, citing spending on fulfillment and hiring to prepare the company for the Christmas holiday rush. He added, “Our video content spend will continue to grow, both sequentially and quarter over quarter.”
Indeed, investing in faster shipping and video has become a refrain of sorts for the company. While some expected Amazon’s spending in these areas – stepped up since last year – to ease, the company is plowing ahead to reinforce its fast-shipping club Prime.
Olsavsky said video content included with Prime membership has helped Amazon retain subscribers and persuade those on a free trial to sign up for $99 per year in the United States. A cornerstone of the company’s strategy, Prime encourages shoppers to buy more goods, more often from Amazon.
Subscription sales including Prime fees rose 51 percent in the second quarter to $2.2 billion. Cowen & Co analysts have estimated that more than 50 percent of US households will have Prime membership by the end of 2017.
“The fact that they are investing on so many fronts right now just speaks to the opportunity that they have before them,” said Edward Jones analyst Josh Olson. “We are giving them the benefit of doubt here because they have executed so well historically.”
Amazon share touched a record high of $1,083.31 earlier on Thursday, helping Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos briefly unseat fellow tech billionaire Bill Gates to become the world’s richest person, according to Forbes. His wealth has followed the meteoric rise of Amazon’s stock.
From its origins as an online bookseller, Amazon has jumped into areas that historically had barriers to e-commerce, from apparel to appliances. The specter of Amazon’s disruption now hangs over a dizzying array of industries.
Grocery is the latest to feel the threat. The company said last month it would buy Whole Foods Market Inc for $13.7 billion, pending regulatory approval.
Olsavsky declined to discuss in detail the company’s strategy for the upscale grocer but said, “We really think it will be a big boost for us as we expand our grocery and consumables offering.”
Amazon also announced its two-hour delivery service Prime Now in Singapore on Wednesday, part of its ongoing investment to be a major retail player in Asia. Amazon has committed to investing $5 billion in India and earlier this year said it would take on commerce in the Middle East by acquiring Dubai-based Souq.com.
Even excluding the proposed Whole Foods deal, Amazon forecast an operating income of between $300 million and a loss of $400 million for the current quarter. Analysts had expected $931 million, according to FactSet StreetAccount.
“You tend to expect companies like this to grow their expenses at a slower rate than their revenues,” said Michael Pachter, analyst at Wedbush Securities. “G&A up 50 (percent) is crazy,” referring to general and administrative costs in the second quarter.
Operating expenses rose 28.2 percent to $37.33 billion in the second quarter ended June 30. Costs for fulfillment, marketing and technology all rose.
Baird Equity Research analyst Colin Sebastian said in a note Amazon’s profit margin was “a bit mixed” but added, “accelerating growth in core retail and relatively steady growth in AWS underpin our positive long-term view.”
Sales from Amazon Web Services, the company’s cash cow and the biggest cloud-computing business in the world, rose 42 percent to $4.1 billion. The subsidiary will expand in France, Sweden and China in the near future, Olsavsky said.

DAY THREE OF THE INDEFINITE FAST IN NARMADA VALLEY

Jal Satyargaha in Narmada by villagers, Challenged Shivraj Singh to Come and face the questions of people of Narmada Valley
Current Water Levels of Sardar Sarovar Effective in Meeting Irrigation and Power Needs, Why Submerge More ?
Aam Aadmi Party to Launch “Save Narmada Displaced, Save Madhya Pradesh” Yatra from August 1st

Badwani, Madhya Pradesh. 29, July 2017: Today is the third day of indefinite fast in the Narmada Valley. Hundreds of the villagers today entered the Narmada waters and observed jal satyagraha. They challenged the government’s plan to force death upon 40,000 families by closing gates of Sardar Sarovar Dam without any complete rehabilitation in the Narmada Valley. Shyama Behn, Bhagirath Dhangar, Saraswati Behn, Devram Kanera and others posed tough questions from Shivraj Chauhan, whose job as a Chief Minister is to serve people. They demanded that let Shivraj Singh Chauhan come and answer these questions in public ? They said, “are these 40,000 families of Narmada valley, millions of trees, their cattle, farm-barn, temple-mosques, schools and entire ancient civilization not a part of India? Can’t the government, pretending to give water to Gujarat, see the people of Madhya Pradesh, their livelihood, forests and rivers? Will the Narmada Valley be sacrificed by the government for the private profit ?”

They added, “Shivraj Singh Chauhan says he will not allow any sewage to come in the Narmada but will he allow the death of the lakhs of the people ? Does he think that Narmada needs the blood of its children ? No mother wants the blood of its own children then why is MP government so willing to sacrifice their life for the sake of Gujarat ?” Today there is a lot of resentment among the people of Narmada Valley, and by denying every attempt of the administration; the Narmada Valley refuses to leave without full and justified rehabilitation. We will face the flood, but will not yield to this unjust government; with such determination people are sitting firmly and fasting.

Support Continues from Political Parties
Ramesh Patel, MLA, Badwani (Congress) came to the fast venue and extended his full support again to the people. Shailesh ji, a project affected person himself and of the Aam Aadmi Party, came along with 10 other members today. They supported the struggle of the Narmada Valley on behalf of the party and announced that from 1st August ‘Save Project Affected and Save Madhya Pradesh” yatra and reported the coming of the MP Bhagwant Mann on August 1st. Alok Agarwal, Aam Aadmi Party Convener, has come before to the Narmada Valley and exposed the government’s fake claims and the need of the electricity, which is primarily for benefiting the industrialists. The heavy rains in Gujarat have completely exposed the current situation where the branch canals are not ready and not managed, but still the politics over Narmada water is being played over lies and false claims.

NDRF forces arrive in Badwani
Despite all this, the administration and the government are eager to displce the people of the Narmada Valley, without resorting to rehabilitation, and forcibly evicting them from the valley. A large number of NDRF detachments have reached in Badwani today. This clearly shows that despite knowing about the tragedy, the government is deliberately working against the people. As the water level increases, there will be havoc in the valley, but not a natural event, a completely man made disaster.

Flooding in Gujarat, Water Levels in Sardar Sarovar
In Gujarat, all the canals are flooded after rains and due to the excess capacity of electricity in Madhya Pradesh, the government is abusing the public exchequer by purchasing power from private power ventures on expensive prices, by shutting down the government power ventures. There is no need of water from the dam or electricity, then why is the state of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh forcing flooding and submergence in 192 villages of Madhya Pradesh by closing the dam gates? Now, when Gujarat is in the midst of floods, the government is giving compensation of Rs 50,000 to the flood affected people in Gujarat and Rs 2.5 lakh to the dead. Such a situation could have been averted in Gujarat if the government had planned decentralized water planning to manage excess water. At the current level of the dam, there is enough water for the irrigation and drinking purposes. However, the water is being diverted for the coca-cola and car factories located in the command area. All the needs of the Gujarat can be mate at the current level, something which Narmada Bachao Andolan have argued for long, then where is the need to impound the dam to its full reservoir level of 139 mts and force submergence.

Solidarity Programmes Across the country
Support from across the country continues to pour in. Today a number of solidarity programmes were held, starting with Kisan Sangharsh Samiti’s in Tapti Sarovar of Multai, MP; protest demonstration by mass organizations in Bhopal; in Jabalpur a solidarity programme by Mahakaushal support groups (Marxist Communist Party, Aam Aadmi Party, Barghi Dam visthapit sangh, ,Jhanshighat Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, Madhya Pradesh Kisan Sabha, Chutka parmanu sanyatr virodhi sangharsh samiti, Janvadi Mahila Samiti, Madhya Pradesh Mahila Sangha, Bhumi Adhikar Andolan, Aadivasi Kisan Mazdoor sangathan, Manav Adhikar Seva Sangh, Dalit Adhikar Sangh, Bundelkhand Mazdoor Kisan Shakti organization and others) in support of the struggle of the Narmada valley and fast against the government.

Many college students have taken to social media to extend their solidarity to the struggle and demanding an intervention from the government to save this catastrophe and do justice.

DEVELOPMENT AT WHAT COST

DEVELOPMENT AT WHAT COST, AND HOW
A DAM THAT DISPLACES 40,000 FAMILIES AND EVEN MAHATMA GANDHI MEMORIAL

New Delhi; 28 July 2017: ANHAD (Act Now for Harmony and Democracy), a socio-cultural organization that stands for justice, secularism and democracy since 2002, strongly condemns the destruction of the local Rajghat in Barwani, Madhya Pradesh, that has housed the urns of Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba and Gandhi’s secretary, Mahadev Desai.
The unceremonious and sudden manner in which the three urns were taken away and the place dug up is simply outrageous.
What makes this act particularly poignant is that close to the site of this memorial, Medha Patkar and her team were protesting for the rehabilitation of 244 villages and 40,000 families that have been rendered homeless by the Sardar Sarovar dam.
Both these developments – the razing the Gandhi Memorial as well as the ongoing struggle of the dam-affected for livelihood and shelter – are unacceptable in a just and transparent democracy.
The governments in power – both at the centre and in Madhya Pradesh –stand accountable for its ruthless destruction of livelihoods, residence and now our history and leaders, all in the name of development.
This comes in the wake of the current government’s attempts to selectively wipe out history, rewrite textbooks, muzzle freedom of speech, among others.
We express our solidarity with Medha Patkar and activists of Narmada Bachao Andolan who are on indefinite fast for justice, life and civilisation in the Narmada valley.

In solidarity,
Aban Raza, Amrita Nandy, Dhruv Sangari, Leena Dabiru, Mukhtar Ahmed Sheikh, Ovais Sultan Khan, Shubha Menon

The Indian women’s basketball team has been elevated to Division A after beating Kazakhstan in a thrilling finale.

BFI President K Govindaraj has announced a cash prize of INR 15,00,000/- to the Indian squad.

Australia’s Kelsey Griffin was named the Most Valuable Player of the Cup. Japan’s Manami Fujioka and Moeko Nagaoka, China’s Li Yueru and Korea’s Lim Yung Hui, along with Griffin were announced as the Asian All-Star five.

Division A

Japan achieve 3-peat

The long awaited final of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup saw defending champions Japan take on powerhouse Australia in a clash of titans. While Japan has won the last two editions, this is the first time this event is also featuring the Oceania teams. World number 4 Australia had defeated Japan once before in the league stages and were looking for a repeat performance today.

Australia started the game shooting lights out from the field. A couple of triples and skilled post play by Kelsey Griffin gave Australia a 12-4 start early in the first period. But Japan quickly regrouped and began to find open shots. Captain Maki Takada contributed 7 points in the first and Japan evened things up. The first quarter ended with both teams at 17 points.

In the second period, Japan got their first lead of the game, thanks to a couple of triples from Yuki Miyazawa. The ‘Japanese blur’ Manami Fujioka continued to create for her teammates, racking up 5 assists in the first half. For Australia, Kelsey Griffin continued to dominate down low, pouring in 14 first-half points.

Entering the second half down by 6 points, Japan’s Saki Mizushima caught fire, hitting three crucial triples. Australia continued to channel their offense through the post play of Griffin and captain Tolo. Griffin was especially effective, powering her way to the basket and displaying her bag of tricks in the post.

In the final period, Mizushima hit some unbelievable contested triples and provided the scoring impetus for her team. Down to the final minutes and the game tied at 71 apiece, Mizushima hit another clutch triple putting Japan up by 3. On the next possession, Australia’s Griffin hit a layup off an offensive rebound, but Japan held on to a 1-point lead and clinched the nail-biter.

Mizushima was the star of the game for Japan with 26 points, including seven 3-pointers. Kelsey Griffin had 30 points and 15 rebounds in the loss and was named MVP of the tournament. Japan achieved the 3-peat downing the Australia challenge. Japan coach Hovasse was ecstatic after the victory, probably the biggest of his career as a head coach.

Japan (Saki Mizushima 26 pts, Yuki Miyazawa 11 pts, Moeko Nagaoka 10 pts) bt Australia (Kelsey Griffin 30 pts 15 rbs, Marianna Tolo 13 pts, Belinda Snell 9 pts) 74-73 [17-17, 16-22, 26-14, 15-20]

China clinch third place beating Korea

After losing out a place in the final in a heartbreaking loss against Japan, China was gunning for a third place finish. They took on South Korea in the third place game today afternoon. In the first half of the game, there was not much to separate the teams. The centres provided the scoring for both teams – Yueru Li for China and Jisu Park for Korea.

But in the second half, fatigue started to show for Korea. China showcased their superior fitness and kept attacking through multiple offensive options. China dominated the second half, outscoring Korea 34 to 17 and clinching a 75-51 blowout win. China centre Yueru Li had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds in the victory, while Jisu Park also had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds for Korea in the loss.

China(Yueru Li 16 pts 11 rbs, Sijing Huang 16 pts, Meng Li 9 pts) bt Korea (Jisu Park 14 pts 11 rbs, Leesul Kang 13 pts, Yung Hui Lim 12 pts) 75-51 [20-19, 21-15, 17-11, 17-6]

Chinese Taipei secure 5th place beating New Zealand

In the battle for 5th place, Chinese Taipei got the better of New Zealand. The Asians got off to a spectacular start, outscoring the Tall Ferns 20 to 4 in the first quarter. Thereafter, it was a matter of holding down the fort. Taipei capitalized on NZ’s 20 turnovers in the game to score 21 points therefrom. NZ could not recover from the slow start and Chinese Taipei ended up blowing out the Ferns for a 65-45 victory. Ting-Jen Huang and Hsi-Li Bao had 10 points each for Taipei in the win.

Chinese Taipei (Ting-Jen Huang 10, Hsi-Le Bao 10, Yu-Ting Lin 9) bt New Zealand (Micaela Cocks 10, Kalani Purcell 8, Antonia Edmondson 8) 65-45 [20-4, 13-15, 15-13, 17-13]

DPR of Korea relegated after losing to Philippines

Newcomers to Division A, Philippines, retained their spot among the best in Asia with a win against DPR of Korea in their Division A relegation match. Philippines had a huge second quarter scoring 29 points compared to Korea’s 10, which set the tone for the rest of the contest. Allana May Lim top scored for the Perlas with 16 points, while Cindy Resutay put up a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Mi Hyang Kim had 20 points for Korea in the loss. After a winless campaign, Korea now see themselves relegated to Division B.

Philippines (Allana May Lim 16 pts, Analyn Almazan 13 pts, Jack Danielle Animam 10 pts, Cindy Resutay 10 pts 10 rbs) bt DPR of Korea (Mi Hyang Kim 20 pts, Suk Yong Ro 17 pts, Hyang Ok Kim 13 pts) 78-63 [18-13, 29-10, 17-16, 14-24]

Division B

India tip Kazakhstan in thriller

The Division B final was a clash between two undefeated Division B teams, India and Kazakhstan. The two teams were meeting for the first time in the tournament. With the winner getting promoted to Division A for the next edition of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup, both teams came out hungry for the victory.

Kazakhstan held the size advantage over the Indian team and this was punctuated by the play of Kazakh centre Nadezhda Kondrakova. She was able to score from inside and outside to begin the game. For India, the scoring came from a balanced team effort. Shireen was aggressive on her drives to the basket, while guards Paul Durai and Raspreet created space to knock down their jumpers.

Kazakhstan held a slim 3-point lead entering the second quarter and the built on it immediately. Tamara Yagodkina hit a couple of big triples in the second period to build on the Kazakh lead. Centre Kondrakova and forward Kurazova were attacking the boards for Kazakhstan, leading to multiple second chance opportunities. Kazakhstan ended the first half with another buzzer-beating triple and extended their lead to 8 points (39 to 31).

In the third quarter, the Kazakh offense continued to flow from bigs Kondrakova and Kurazova. But India slowly started to find their offensive rhythm. Shireen and Raspreet hit a couple of jumpers to give India some momentum. Debutante Grima Merlin came off the bench to provide an offensive spark with her strong drives to the basket. Shireen punched in a triple to end the third quarter, holding the Kazakh lead to 8 points again.

In the fourth, India began with a 6-0 run, with Paul Durai and Raspreet hitting a triple each. Grima followed it up with another shot from beyond the arc and the Kazakhs were thrown off their game. With the lead finally down to just one point, Jeena stepped up to give India the lead with a nifty move in the post. But Kazakh centre Kondrakova continued to fire, playing to her strengths in the post against the smaller Indian defenders. It all came down to the final minutes, when Kazakhstan arrested a 5-point lead, with a bucket from Kondrakova followed by a huge triple from forward Oxana Ossipenko.

But the Kazakh lead was soon cut down by a Shireen layup followed by a Jeena and-1 drive to the hoop. With the game tied at 71 apiece, both teams exchange buckets – Shireen from India and Oxana from Kazakhstan. There was 19 seconds left in the game and possession belonged to India with the ball in the hands of India’s MVP in the game, Shireen Limaye. Despite being a scambled play, Shireen managed to create space and hit a deep stepback jumper, putting India up with under a second left. The last ditch effort from Kazakhstan was to no avail and India secured a historic win, advancing to Division A of the FIBA Asia zone.

“All the hard work over the past 5 months paid off!” said India star Limaye after the thrilling victory.

Nissan Motor, Renault and Mitsubishi Motors group has become the world’s number one automaker in terms of unit sales for the first time.
Major automakers have been reporting how many cars they have sold in the world during the first half of this year.
The latest release was from Toyota Motor and that shows the Renault-Nissan group’s sales have topped those of Volkswagen and Toyota.
Toyota says that its group, which includes Daihatsu and Hino, sold more than 5.12million vehicles around the globe in the January-June period. That lags behind Nissan group which delivered 5.26 million vehicles.
Volkswagen came in second with 5.15 million.
Nissan executives say their group sales were robust in China and other emerging economies.
Their sales were also pushed up after they acquired a majority stake in Mitsubishi last October.NHK

ISIS CLAIMS RESPONSIBILITY FOR ATTACK NEAR IRAQI EMBASSY IN KABUL

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) claimed responsibility on Monday for a suicide attack that targeted the Iraqi embassy in the Afghan capital Kabul, the group’s Amaq news agency reported. Afghan security forces battled gunmen near a police compound and the nearby Iraqi embassy on Monday. They said the attackers appeared to have taken cover in the embassy building in a business district of the city, from where smoke could be seen rising.

VENEZUELA PROTESTS LOOM

An  election in which less than thirty percent votes is to give powers to President and null to mull  the position voices  was  condemned by the US  President Donald Trump, European Union, Canada and Latin American powers including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.
Senior opposition leader Henrique Capriles called on Venezuelans to continue defying the deeply unpopular Maduro with new protests against the election and the “massacre” he said accompanied it.
“We do not recognize this fraudulent process,” he said, calling for nationwide marches Monday and a mass protest in Caracas Wednesday, the day the new assembly is due to be installed.
Maduro has decreed a ban on protests during and after the vote, threatening prison terms of up to 10 years.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro claimed victory Monday in an internationally criticized election to pick a new assembly to rewrite the constitution, but the opposition vowed to keep protesting despite deadly clashes.
Ten people were killed in a wave of bloodshed that swept Venezuela Sunday as Maduro defied an opposition boycott and international condemnation — including the threat of new US sanctions — to hold elections for a powerful new “Constituent Assembly.”
Protesters attacked polling stations and barricaded streets around the country, drawing a bloody response from security forces, who opened fire with live ammunition in some cases.
Despite the boycott and the unrest, the head of the National Electoral Council, Tibisay Lucena — one of 13 Maduro allies already hit by US sanctions — said there had been “extraordinary turnout” of more than eight million voters, 41.5 percent of the electorate.
In a speech to hundreds of supporters in central Caracas, Maduro hailed it as a win.
“We have a Constituent Assembly,” he said.
“It is the biggest vote the revolution has ever scored in its 18-year history,” he said, referring to the year his late mentor, Hugo Chavez, came to power.
The socialist president is gambling his four-year rule on the 545-member assembly, which will be empowered to dissolve the opposition-controlled congress and rewrite the constitution.
But the unrest fueled fears that his insistence on convening the assembly — despite months of demonstrations — would only plunge the country deeper into chaos.
There was blistering international condemnation of the vote, led by Washington.
“The United States condemns the elections… for the National Constituent Assembly, which is designed to replace the legitimately elected National Assembly and undermine the Venezuelan people´s right to self-determination,” US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.
It threatened further “strong and swift” sanctions on Maduro´s government.
The election was also condemned by the European Union, Canada and Latin American powers including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.
The opposition said the vote was a fraud.

TURKEY DETAINS MORE THAN 1K IN ANTI-TERROR RAIDS

Turkish authorities detained 1,098 people over the last week for suspected links to militant groups or last year’s failed coup attempt, the Interior Ministry said on Monday. It said 831 of those were detained for suspected ties to the US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for orchestrating an attempted coup in July. Gulen denies any involvement. The ministry said another 213 of those were suspected of links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has carried out a three-decade insurgency against the government. Forty-six people were detained over alleged links to Islamic State, while 8 more were held for suspected ties to “leftist terrorist groups,” the ministry said.
Thousands of people rallied in Turkey’s largest city on Sunday against security measures Israel has imposed at the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, shortly after Israel removed other measures that led to two weeks of violent Palestinian protests.
The rally in Istanbul, called “The Big Jerusalem Meeting” and organized by Turkey’s Saadet Party, drew some five thousand people to the Yenikapi parade ground on the southern edge of Istanbul.
Protesters were brought in by buses and ferries from across the city, waved Turkish and Palestinian flags, and held up posters in front of a giant stage where the chairman of the Saadet party and representatives from NGOs addressed the crowd.
“The Al-Aqsa mosque is our honor,” read a poster.
“You should know that not only Gaza, but Tel Aviv also has their eyes on this parade ground. Netanyahu does as well, and he is scared”, said Saadet Party Chairman Temel Karamollaoglu, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Turkey has opposed the security measures installed at the entry points of the mosque compound, with President Tayyip Erdogan warning Israel that it would suffer most from the dispute.
Erdogan accused Israel of inflicting damage on Jerusalem’s “Islamic character”, in comments that Israel’s foreign ministry called “absurd”.
The dispute over security at the mosque compound – where Israel installed metal detectors at entry points after two police guards were shot dead this month – has touched off the bloodiest clashes between Israelis and Palestinians in years.
On Friday however, the main prayer session at the Al-Aqsa mosque ended relatively calmly after Israel removed the tougher security measures, though it barred entrance to men under age 50.
Israel captured East Jerusalem, including the Old City and the holy compound, in the 1967 Middle East war. It annexed the area in a move that has never been recognized internationally.
Al-Aqsa mosque, Islam’s third holiest shrine, sits in the heart of the Old City. It is also the holiest place in Judaism – the venue of two ancient temples, the last destroyed by the Romans. Jews pray under heavy security at the Western Wall at the foot of the elevated plaza.

AUSTRALIA BEEF-UP AIRPORT SECURITY

Stricter screening of passengers and luggage at Australian airports will stay in place indefinitely after police foiled an alleged “Islamic-inspired” plot to bring down a plane, which local media said may have involved a bomb or poisonous gas. The ramped up security procedures were put in place after four men were arrested at the weekend in raids conducted across several Sydney suburbs. The men are being held without charge under special terror-related powers. The Australian Federal Police would not confirm media reports the alleged plot may have involved a bomb disguised in a meat grinder or the planned release of poisonous gas inside a plane. Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Andrew Colvin told reporters on Monday that the plot specifics were still being investigated

ECP CANNOT AUDIT PARTY FUNDS: PTI

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief’s counsel, Anwar Mansoor, claimed before the Supreme Court today that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has no right to audit a political party’s funds after they have been audited by a chartered accountancy firm.
Mansoor, the counsel for PTI Chairman Imran Khan, was presenting his arguments before the three-judge Supreme Court bench, which resumed hearing the disqualification case against the PTI chairman today.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi petitioned the Supreme Court late last year to disqualify Imran and PTI leader Jahangir Tareen for ‘not declaring their assets and violating the income tax ordinance and peoples act’. The petition also terms the PTI a ‘foreign funded party’.
Mansoor resumed arguments today after being absent from previous proceedings owing to a medical leave.
Addressing the bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Mansoor argued that the ECP can only conduct scrutiny and not an inquiry of funds.
He claimed the law has no provision for the ECP to inquire into a party’s funds once its details have been submitted to it.
The chief justice observed whether not having the power to scrutinise funds is an acceptable defence by the PTI.
He further remarked that the defence being presented by the counsel is not per the correct interpretation of the law.
Mansoor is continuing PTI counsel Naeem Bukhari’s arguments presenting the money trail of Imran’s properties in London and Islamabad.
The hearing was then adjourned until tomorrow.

ABE ANNOUNCED PLANS TO RESHUFFLE

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has formally announced plans to reshuffle the cabinet and leadership of the governing party on Thursday.
Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will shake up his cabinet 3rd August, the government’s top spokesman said Tuesday, as public support plummets after a series of scandals. Abe too faced claims he used influence to help a friend in a business deal, an accusation he denies, while the country’s defense minister resigned last week following a controversy over military documents. Abe told ministers he was planning a reshuffle on Thursday to “push ahead with various reforms under a new line-up,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters. Suga said the new cabinet’s top priority would be reviving the economy, adding it would also work to ensure national security, in an apparent reference to North Korea’s increasing missile threat.
Abe spoke during an executive meeting of the Liberal Democratic Party on Tuesday.
He said he aims to reinvigorate the lineup which comes exactly one year after the current cabinet was appointed on August 3.
Senior party members agreed to give Abe the freedom to select a new executive lineup.
After the meeting, LDP Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai told reporters that he approves of Abe’s decision to carry out a reshuffle.
Nikai added that the party needs to conduct itself with caution, because people have various opinions over its management.
The planned reshuffle comes as Abe’s cabinet has been hit by a series of scandals. A recent NHK poll has shown a sharp drop in the cabinet’s approval rating.

FRANCE, GERMANY TIGHTEN DEFENSE COOPERATION IN AFRICA’S SAHEL

Germany coordinates  with France’s push to make operational a new multinational military force that will tackle Islamist militants in Africa’s Sahel region and urged other powers to contribute funds at an Autumn donor conference.
On a joint visit to Niger’s capital, Niamey, German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen and her French counterpart, Florence Parly, said yesterday that the Sahel force was West Africa’s best hope for defeating the militants.
Some observers see the G5 Sahel force — comprised of troops from Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad  forming the basis of an eventual exit strategy for around 4,000 French troops deployed in the volatile region.
France has said it has no plans to withdraw them  a stance reiterated by Parly in Niamey.
Parly and Von der Leyen’s trips are the latest show of tightening defense and security cooperation between Berlin and Paris since Emmanuel Macron became French president in May.
In mid-July Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel unveiled plans to develop a European fighter jet, burying past defense industry rivalries in a move designed to give fresh impetus to Franco-German relations. The ministers announced plans for a September donor conference in Berlin. French diplomats hope to bring Washington on board.
Parly met the presidents of Chad and Niger. She will travel today to a French military base in the northern city of Gao in Mali before heading to Bamako where she will meet up with Von der Leyen again.

INDIANS PREFER QUALITY NET CONTENT OVER ONLINE FREEBIES

New Mozilla backed research reveals that Indians prefer quality net content over online freebies

  • Mere reward points fail to nudge Indian users to choose online apps or content
  • Users evaluate potential hidden costs in using such rewards
  • Net savvy users refer apps to later convert monetary awards into data, talk time or e-commerce transactions

August 1, San Francisco/ New Delhi: New research backed by Mozilla, the makers of Firefox, and carried out by LIRNEasia, an Asia Pacific-based information and communication technology think tank, reveals that internet users in India are quite discerning and don’t always choose online services purely on the basis of freebies offered. Consequently, according to the report Cost-strained optimization: User perspectives on internet use in India by Gayani Hurulle and Helani Galpaya, merely the prospect of earning rewards does not appear to be attracting users in India towards certain applications or content. Moreover, when users don’t know the data allowance required to download such apps, they hypothesize as to whether the potential reward would exceed the cost.

In addition, technology savvy users are downloading the promoted apps and referring friends purely to earn monetary rewards, which they convert to talk time or data or e-commerce transactions. However, limitations may arise as users have to refer friends in order to earn rewards and most ‘pyramid-like’ reference systems have a limited shelf-life before eventually collapsing.

“We worried that rewarding people for the use of apps would have a ‘tunneling effect’, where users don’t explore the wider internet,” said Helani Galpaya, CEO of LIRNEasia. “But such fears are premature in India, where we see diverse content being accessed even by users of these apps.”

“While TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has ruled that zero rating is too harmful to consumers and competition to be allowed, there’s still a need to find alternative ways of connecting the unconnected. From this research, it doesn’t look like earned reward applications will be the answer,” saidJochai Ben-Avie, Senior Global Policy Manager, Mozilla. “We believe users want and deserve equal rating solutions, which are free of discrimination, gatekeepers, and pay-to-play schemes.”

Respondents not using the internet cited unaffordability and the lack of digital skills amongst the reasons for not being online. Reliance Jio, which offered free 4G data during the period of fieldwork, served as a counterpoint to zero-rated offers, which subsidized specific content. Many of those who owned a Jio SIM were already online, and used it as a secondary SIM to enhance their user experience. Some were not able to capitalize on the availability of free data via Jio, due to difficulties in affording a 4G-compatible device.

This highlights the sequential nature of the challenge of affordability, whereby the problem of cost of data becomes relevant only once an individual is able to  purchase a device. Provision of free data alone, thus, may not be the magic bullet. Increased efforts to make devices affordable and impart digital skills may be needed to enhance internet use.
The research also reflected other studies that show a global shift away from Facebook-use among younger users.

As part of the research, elaborate and often insightful discussions were held in December, 2016 with people from diverse social backgrounds in five locations in and around New Delhi at Sriniwasipuri, Rajouri Garden, Chattarpur, Keshav Puram and Shakarpur for this research.

Earned reward apps require consumers to download applications or engage in an activity to gain rewards. They gained prominence after the Indian telecom regulator TRAI prevented service providers from “offering or charging discriminatory tariffs for data services on the basis of content.”

The Mozilla supported study was primarily conducted to understand how Indians use the internet when data is subsidized and when it is not.

In March this year, Mozilla had conferred the USD 125,000 (INR 82-lakh) ‘Equal Rating Innovation Challenge’ award on Mumbai-based Project Gram Marg for its unique affordable broadband initiative, as part of its own commitment to provide affordable internet to all.

SWARAJ INDIA’S ONE-DAY SYMBOLIC FAST

Swaraj India’s one-day symbolic fast in solidarity & support of Narmada valley.
  • Swaraj India’s support for the displaced people of Narmada Valley and the struggle of Narmada Bachao Andolan.
  • Yogendra Yadav along with volunteers of Swaraj India held a symbolic one-day fast at Jantar Mantar in support of Medha Patkar’s anshan
  • In the petition filed against displacement without complete rehabilitation, the Supreme Court has fixed August 8th as the next date of hearing
  • As a mark of support for the people of Narmada Valley, volunteers of Swaraj India marked blue imprints of their palm on a 30 feet long basanti cloth. Blue symbolises the colour of Narmada and basanti symbolises Swaraj India’s commitment to cause.
Swaraj India today lent its support to the Narmada Bachao Andolan and demanded justice for the displaced people of Narmada Valley. Along with Party President Yogendra Yadav, various volunteers of Swaraj India observed a one-day symbolic fast at Jantar Mantar in support of the struggle of the displayed people of the Narmada Valley. The fast of Swaraj India’s leaders & volunteers was in the solidarity with the  activists who are observing an indefinite fast under the leadership of Medha Patkar. The day-long program was scheduled to be held till the evening and was supposed to culminate in a candle march, but due to heavy rains, the candle march had to be cancelled.
It is noteworthy that 1 city and 244 villages in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra are under the danger of being submerged due to the planned increase in water levels of Sardar Sarovar dam on Narmada river. Along with these villages, 40,000 families with a population of over 2 lakhs, their cattle, their temples & mosques, and millions of trees are on the brink of being submerged. Such a huge massacre is being carried out only because the Narmada Control Authority has decided that the height of Sardar Sarovar dam should be increased from 122 meters to 138.62 meters.
In fact, the government kept changing the number of displaced people from time to time. And even if these figures are to be considered, applications of thousands of families that are eligible for compensation are still pending with the Narmada Valley Development Authority and Grievance Redressal Authority and despite these applications being pending, the Narmada Control Authority has ordered the closure of the gates of Sardar Sarovar Dam.
A writ petition has also been filed in this case in the Supreme Court where August 8 has been fixed as the next date of the hearing. Senior advocate and Swaraj Abhiyan President Prashant Bhushan is also arguing the case for Narmada Bachao Andolan
All set to submerge about 2.4 lakh people, the state and central governments are preparing to ‘celebrate the occasion’ with a ‘Narmada Aarti’ alongwith 2000 pandits on 12th of August.
Swaraj India’s Delhi State President, Anupam said that as a mark of solidarity & support for the people of Narmada Valley, volunteers of Swaraj India marked the imprints of their hands with blue colour on a 30 feet long basanti cloth. Blue symbolising the colour of Narmada and basanti symbolising Swaraj India’s commitment to the cause. The basanti cloth will then be presented to the representatives of the Narmada Bachao Andolan.
Yogendra Yadav, the National President of Swaraj India, said that the fight to save Narmada is the fight of every citizen of this country.
“I salute the spirit of the people who have been fighting this struggle for over 32 years now,” Yogendra Yadav said.
“This fight is not only for the displaced people of Narmada Valley but for the whole humanity. Swaraj India’s alternative politics is to stand firmly against all kinds of injustice without considering any profit/loss or vote-bank. While on one side the country’s political parties are busy practicing petty politics of power, with this occasion at Jantar Mantar, Swaraj India has introduced a politics of conviction for the masses & justice.
Dharmvira Gandhi (MP from Patiala), Ali Anwar (Rajya Sabha MP), Raju Shetty (Lok Sabha MP), Dr. Sunilam from Kisan Sangarsh Samiti, Vimal Bhai Gandhian associated wth Narmada Bachao Andolan, Madhuresh from Narmada Bachao Andolan, social scientist Soumya Dutta, Narmada Bachao Andolan’s Joe Athiyali, Timarpur MLA Pankaj Pushkar, Bhupendra Singh Rawat from National Alliance of People’s Movement, Elongwen from the All India Fishermen Association, Thomas Franco from All India Bank Officers’ Union, Priya Pillai from Greenpeace, Faisal Khan from Khudai Khidmatgar and many other political & social activists also addressed the gathering of Swaraj India volunteers on the struggle of Narmada Bachao Andolan.

PRESIDENT XI SAYS CHINA LOVES PEACE BUT WON’T COMPROMISE ON SOVEREIGNTY

BEIJING: China loves peace but will never compromise on defending its sovereignty, President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday while marking 90 years since the founding of the People’s Liberation Army.
China has rattled nerves around Asia and globally with its increasingly assertive stance in territorial disputes in the East and South China Seas and an ambitious military modernization plan.
Relations with self-ruled Taiwan have also worsened since Tsai Ing-wen from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party won presidential elections there last year. China considers Taiwan a wayward province, to be brought under Beijing’s control by force if necessary.
Xi, speaking at the Great Hall of the People, made no direct reference to any particular territorial dispute, as he sought to assure that China’s intentions were peaceful, but also show that China would not be bullied.
“The Chinese people love peace. We will never seek aggression or expansion, but we have the confidence to defeat all invasions,” Xi said in comments carried live on state television.
“We will never allow any people, organization or political party to split any part of Chinese territory out of the country at any time, in any form,” he said. “No one should expect us to swallow the bitter fruit that is harmful to our sovereignty, security or development interests.”
The army has been a central target of Xi’s wide-ranging anti-corruption campaign, with several senior military officers, including Xu Caihou, Guo Boxiong and Gu Junshan, being felled for graft since Xi came to power.
Xi said that, after five years’ hard work, the PLA had successfully “remodelled” its organizational and power structure, as well as its public image.
A reshuffle of the military’s senior ranks at a key five-yearly Communist Party congress in the autumn is expected to further strengthen his grip, and Xi repeatedly reaffirmed the Party’s “absolute leadership” over the army.
“To build a strong military, [we] must unswervingly adhere to the Party’s absolute leadership over the armed forces, and make sure that the people’s army always follow the Party,” Xi said.
Quoting Chairman Mao Zedong, the founder of modern China, Xi said: “Our principle is that the party commands the guns, and the guns must never be allowed to command the party.”
China has not fought a war in decades and the government insists it has no hostile intent, but simply needs the ability to properly defend the world’s second-largest economy.
China’s armed forces, the world’s largest, are in the midst of an ambitious modernization program, which includes investment in technology and new equipment, such as stealth fighters and aircraft carriers, as well as cuts to troop numbers.
“The People’s Army must be brave enough to change and innovate, not at any time must it become rigid or stagnate,” Xi said.
Some of the military reforms have been controversial at home. Sources with ties to the military say Xi’s announcement at the 2015 parade to cut 300,000 troops has caused unease within the ranks.
On Sunday, Xi presided over a large military parade at the remote Zhurihe training base in China’s northern Inner Mongolia region, where he inspected troops from the back of a jeep.

SHIV KAPUR EAGER TO CONTINUE HOT STREAK AT TAKE SOLUTIONS MASTERS

Bengaluru, August 2, 2017: Shiv Kapur has been one of the leading performers for India on the international stage this year. The Indian is now eager to continue his hot streak in his home country as he sets his sights on the inaugural TAKE Solutions Masters, a US$ 300,000 event co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the PGTI, which gets underway on Thursday.
It has been a satisfying season so far for the Indian, who won his second Asian Tour title at the Yeangder Heritage in Chinese Taipei in April after waiting for more than 11 years. He followed that up with a joint second finish at the Thailand Open and also played in The Open two weeks ago where he missed the cut by a single shot.
Kapur said, “I’m really looking forward to this week since I’m playing in Bengaluru after five years. The win in Chinese Taipei earlier this year took a big load off my shoulders. It was then nice to back that up with another top result in Thailand and a few good finishes in Europe.
“Mentally I’m now in a good place. I’m in this bubble right now and the game is good. I would love to make this week count.
“We have a great field at this week’s event. It’s probably one of the best fields of the year for a full field event. You have all the recent winners on the Asian Tour here as well as most of the leading Indian players. With Bengaluru now emerging as a major centre for golf in India, it was befitting that the city got an Asian Tour event.
“The KGA course is in superb shape. The rough is up and one will need to be more accurate off the tee. You need to be in the right sections of the green since the greens are undulating. It’s a course that you can’t overpower, as it needs careful planning and execution. It suits my game.”
Shiv is excited about the fact that India is now hosting as many as three international events with the addition of the TAKE Solutions Masters to the Asian Tour schedule. He was all praise for TAKE’s initiative.
“Some of the top Indian players such as Jeev, SSP and me, are playing here this week as a mark of respect for Mr. Srinivasan and his immense contribution to Indian golf. It’s great to have the TAKE Solutions Masters upgraded to an Asian Tour event. We’re now fortunate to have three Asian Tour events in India. Hopefully, this event will grow into something even bigger and better in the years to come,” said Shiv.
However, the two-time Asian Tour winner admits that his attention will be divided between trying to win the US$ 300,000 Asian Tour event and to the wellbeing of his wife, who is due in the next 10 days or earlier.
He said, “My wife has been very cooperative, she told me to come and play this week even though we will be expecting our first child next week. My phone will be on standby just in case I have to go back and enjoy the birth of our first child. My wife is on emergency dial and in case I have to go back, I’ll go back to the baby.”
Speaking about his recent outing at the British Open, Shiv mentioned the positives he drew from the experience despite missing the cut.
“It was a wonderful experience. I was unfortunate to miss out by one shot. Probably Anirban and me got the worst end of the conditions but that’s the luck of the draw and one has to be prepared for it. I only take positives out of the week. Given the conditions I played quite well and it gave me this belief that when I play well I can compete with the best in the world. Hopefully I can play myself into more Majors in the future. I feel I’m now better prepared to deal with the rigours of playing a Major.”

VENEZUELAN OPPOSITION LEADERS IN NEW CRACKDOWN

Venezuela government jailed two leading critics of President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday in a fresh blow to the opposition after the election of a new political body with absolute powers to strengthen the hand of the leftist government.
The United States imposed sanctions on Maduro on Monday, calling him a “dictator” for Sunday’s election of a constituent assembly that the opposition boycotted and denounced as illegitimate.
In a statement announcing the jailing of opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez and veteran politician Antonio Ledezma, the pro-government Supreme Court said they were planning to flee the country and had violated terms of their house arrest by making political statements and speaking to media.
But government opponents called the abrupt removal of the men from their homes by security forces in nighttime raids a sign of Maduro’s determination to silence rivals and stamp out four months of massive street protests against him.
About 120 people have been killed in the unrest, including at least 10 during Sunday’s vote.
Both Lopez and Ledezma had been urging protests against Sunday’s vote, which they charged was rigged and a naked power grab by Maduro.
In addition to rewriting the constitution and superseding other institutions, the constituent assembly will have the power to dissolve the opposition-led congress, eliminating any formal political challenge to Maduro.
Lopez had been held more than three years in a military jail until last month, when he was unexpectedly released in what was seen as a potential breakthrough in the country’s long-running political standoff.
Attempts to get the opposition and the government to reach a negotiated deal subsequently floundered, however, and allies said Lopez, 46, may have been jailed again because he rejected government proposals.
“They have kidnapped Leopoldo Lopez because he simply would not break under the pressures and false promises of the regime,” said Freddy Guevara, a legislator in the Popular Will party led by Lopez.
A US-educated economist and former mayor in Caracas, Lopez is beloved by some in the opposition for his hardline anti-government stance and has become an international cause celebre.
The government sees him as an elitist coup-monger, and even some opposition sympathizers have criticized him for being hot-headed and authoritarian.
Lopez himself suspected he would be detained again, and had recorded a video alongside his wife Lilian Tintori in which he urged Venezuelans to keep fighting even if he was put back behind bars.
“If you’re seeing this video it’s precisely because that’s what happened, they jailed me again, illegally and unjustly,” said Lopez, in the video shown on social media on Tuesday.
Blamed by many for an unprecedented economic crisis and rising levels of poverty in Venezuela, Maduro has faced almost daily protests demanding freedom for jailed politicians, humanitarian aid to combat food and medicine shortages, and early elections to replace him.
Condemnation of Tuesday’s arrests came, among others, from the United Nations human rights chief, the president of the European Parliament, and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who called the re-arrests “very alarming.”
Lopez and Ledezma were both taken from their homes to Ramo Verde, a military jail in a slum area about an hour’s drive from the capital, according to lawyers and family.
Lopez was originally arrested for his role in leading street demonstrations against Maduro. Ledezma, a 62-year-old veteran politician, had been arrested on charges of plotting a coup.
Maduro accuses the opposition of continuing to seek a coup against him and says the constituent assembly is designed to bring peace back to the volatile nation.
The opposition-controlled congress, whose days may now be numbered, condemned the creation of the constituent assembly in a session held on Tuesday.
Ambassadors from Britain, France, Mexico, and Spain attended the session. Underscoring fears of escalating violence in the South American nation, the UK said all dependents of embassy staff in Caracas had been withdrawn.

CZECH’S NEW OFFICE TO DEAL WITH CYBERATTACKS

The Czech Republic has opened a new office focused on preventing cyberattacks. The Czech National Cyber and Information Security Office is based in country’s second-largest city, Brno. It employs 118 people for now, but officials say the staff could grow to 400. The official opening on Tuesday comes as public institutions and businesses have reported a growing number of attacks. The foreign minister announced earlier this year that his email account and the accounts of dozens of ministry officials were hacked.

INDIA IS MORE ATTRACTIVE TO FDIS

India along with Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam is more attractive to FDIs as compared to other emerging markets. A report by Japan’s financial services major, Nomura, dubbed India and these ASEAN countries as Asia’s tiger cubs.
It said FDI inflows to these nations will increase from around 100 billion US Dollars per year now to around 240 billion dollars by 2025.
The report said, sources of FDI to these countries are also witnessing a significant shift with more inflows expected from countries as China and Japan.
The report also said, rising labour costs in China and an ageing population in Northeast Asia have dis-incentivised FDI and they are in search of new destinations and India and the ASEAN-5 are well placed to emerge as that destination.

INDIA TO CONSTRUCT HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER UNDER INDUS WATER TREATY

India is allowed to construct hydro-electric power facilities on tributaries of the Jhelum and Chenab rivers under the Indus Waters Treaty. The World Bank’s comments came in a fact sheet yesterday as officials from India and Pakistan concluded the secretary-level talks over the Treaty.
Pakistan is opposed to the construction of the Kishanganga and Ratle hydroelectric power plants being built by India in Jammu and Kashmir. The two countries disagree over whether the technical design features of the two hydroelectric plants contravene the treaty. The World Bank said that among other uses, India is permitted to construct hydroelectric power facilities on these rivers subject to specified constraints.
A statement issued by World Bank said the talks on the technical issues of the Indus Waters Treaty took place in a spirit of goodwill and cooperation in Washington. The parties have agreed to continue discussions and re convene in September.

ARVIND KEJRIWAL ON THE SARDAR SAROVAR DAM ISSUE:

Statement of AAP National Convenor, Arvind Kejriwal on the Sardar Sarovar Dam issue:
The Narmada Valley is facing a devastating prospect. After the gates of the dam have been closed, the water level has been constantly rising. Our party’s MP Bhagwant Mann toured the region that will be submerged and the rehabilitation area, and he found that over 1 lakh people are living in the villages that are in the area affected by the dam gates closing, but no arrangements have been made for them in the space identified for their rehabilitation. Police and bulldozers have been despatched in large numbers to the area.
Demanding that the rehabilitation of all residents living in the affected region be completed before the waters submerge their villages, Medha Patkar has been on a fast and her health is deteriorated. Despite her fast entering the ninth day, no attempts have been made by the government to reach out to her.
Legally the rehabilitation must take place six months before the submergence of villages, and this has been clearly stated by the Supreme Court as well. It is completely illegal, inhuman and undemocratic to use police force to evict the residents of the Valley under such circumstances.
I strongly support the fight for the rights of those being displaced in the Narmada Valley and appeal to the Centre to protect their rights and our democracy, by stopping the Narmada waters from submerging the villages of the affected region. The Centre should engage in a constructive dialogue with the displaced and ensure complete rehabilitation before closing the gates of the dam.
